Feature – Ellie Cadzow Q & A

Ellie Cadzow

1. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
Ellie: I will do a couple of early season races in February to get my legs back in road mode after a winter of cyclo-cross but the first big race is the Team Series race at Hog Hill in March which always has a nice big field.

2. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Ellie: I am determined to do well at the National Series races this year after a good winter with no illness but the biggest target will be the Eastern region road champs. It is the first year with a proper regional champs race and I am really looking forward to it.

3. How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training? Long miles or cutting back to do top end efforts?
Ellie: I am still doing miles but now the road rides include efforts. Essentially taking the efforts from the Turbo and putting them on the road

4. What was your favourite Xmas present?
Ellie: I was bought a Sat Nav which really pleased my fiancé as I tend to borrow his. And I have already been able to test the European map part as I was France for New Year

5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet?
Ellie: It depends on the conditions as a whole. I train alone a lot of the time so if it is rain plus strong winds, I will get on the turbo. If it is just rain, I go out and my biggest tip is to just keep going. You get cold if you stop and then it is harder to get going again but generally, invest in a good waterproof like the Gore rain jackets as the top end one is really breathable too.

6. If you could do any race in the world including World Tour etc, what would it be and why?
Ellie: I would like to race the Tour of Flanders because cobbles are something you do not get much of in the UK and it always an exciting race. I also enjoyed reading David Millar’s account of it in his new book “The Racer” and it really makes you want to try the cobbled classics just to see how painful they can be.

7. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
Ellie: I love bananas (particularly on road rides) and when I am away for races, it is definitely porridge as it is an easy meal to eat before a race.

8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
Ellie: I don’t tend to listen to music when warming up but on the turbo I have a playlist on shuffle so if I had to choose my favourite warm-up track, it would be either The Ecstasy of Gold by Ennio Morricone or Starlight by Muse

9. If given the option, normal brakes or discs?
Ellie: Normal brakes (personally I do not think disc brakes look right on a road bike)

10. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it? (include a pic or two if you have them!)
Ellie: The spec of 2016 bike is a Genesis Zero Z.2 with full ultegra groupset and Fulcrum racing 7 wheels. We haven’t yet received our bike but I am very much looking forward to the change to 11 speed as my own bike is still 10 speed. Having tried the 6800 groupset briefly, I am looking forward to smoother shifting and the better shaped STI levers which are very comfortable compared to the 6700. I cannot wait to get riding on the Genesis!
