News: Cavendish Tops Dubai Entry
Viviani, Kittel and Cavendish three of many sprinters heading for Tour of Dubai
Cavendish is one of the favourites for the race in new colours for Dimension Data
The upcoming Dubai Tour, scheduled for 3 to 6 February sees 2015 winner Mark Cavendish lead a peloton that also includes the former world champions Sir Bradley Wiggins (GBR), the Belgian Philippe Gilbert, the Portuguese Rui Alberto Faria da Costa, the Swiss Fabian Cancellara, the German Tony Martin and a bunch of great sprinters including the Italians Elia Viviani and Andrea Guardini, Germany’s Marcel Kittel and the Aussie Matthew Goss.
The Dubai Tour has three stages suited to the sprinters and one – stage three, The Westin Stage – for the ‘puncheurs’. New features for the 2016 Dubai Tour are the first finish in the Fujairah Emirate (Dubai Silicon Oasis Stage) and a new venue for the last sprint at the up and coming Business Bay district (Business Bay Stage).
The entry list includes 10 UCI WorldTeams, three UCI Professional Continental teams, three UCI Continental teams (with the UAE National Selection replaced by the Al Nasr Pro Cycling Team-Dubai). Each team at the start of Dubai Tour will consist of eight riders.
Due to the accident that occurred in Spain during the weekend, the Giant-Alpecin team will be updated shortly.
Star names looking to get their season underway include Lars Boom, Philippe Gilbert, Sacha Modolo, Giovanni Visconti, and to be confirmed, Elia Viviani and Fabian Cancellara.
British interest will focus on lots of different riders. As well as Cavendish with support from his old GB Academy teammate Matt Brammeier, the race sees Alex Dowsett entered for Movistar, Yanto Barker, Chris Opie, Marcin Bialoblocki (One Pro), Andy Fenn and Ben Swift (Sky) and the Wiggins team including Bradley, Mark Christian, Jon Dibben, Owain Doull, Liam Holohan, Chris Latham, Andy Tennant and Daniel Patten.
