Rider question and answer with ‘cross rider Bruce Dalton (ASL360) who’s going to have a dig at the road in 2016

Feature – Bruce Dalton Q & A
1. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
Bruce: I’m thinking of starting my road season in March doing some SERRL road races or Surrey Leagues. I’m also potentially doing some riding around local races at Challenge Mallorca at the end of February.
2. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Bruce: I’m just planning on having a crack at the road. I’ve never really done more than two or three a year and with the cost of MTB racing increasing and the fact getting to races is again more difficult, I thought going “full roadie†and away from my MTB roots seemed like a good idea. If the worst happens, I’ll just sit at the back pushing 39-15 and enjoy dropping the heel with friends.
3. How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training?
Bruce: Training is a funny one. I only really train for CX. I don’t intend to do much more than ride hard a bit and enjoy riding generally while taking in the coffee and chat. I’ve not been a big miles kind of guy before now but with several long distance challenges set for 2016, I might actually need to ride over 100 Miles.
4. What was your favourite Xmas present?
Bruce: I got some really nice ginger preserve.
5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet?
Bruce: I like to get out and ride. Sometimes a sweaty lunchtime turboclub is necessary. I’m lucky to have support from Gore Clothing and Goretex so I would say my best tip is to try an OXYgen Goretex cap and jacket. That removes the word EXCUSE from your winter riding vocab.
6. If you could do any race in the world including the best ones in the world etc, what would it be and why?
Bruce: Cyclo Cross world champs. I’m a ‘cross rider and would have loved to been there on that course in Sven’s final world championships.
7. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
Bruce: I really like Clif shot blocks. They are perfect for on the bike and natural is nice. Alternatively off the bike I like nice Serrano ham.
8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
Bruce: A dirty Dutch drum and base track or something from Avicii levels podcasts.
9. If given the option, would you prefer normal brakes or disc brakes on your road bike?
Bruce: Discs, luckily we have already got them ready for racing when they become legal with our kinesis Aithein discs but this year we will all just be on the standard superlight alloy Aithein.
10. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it?
Bruce: This year I’m on a Kinesis Aithein with Dura ace 9000, Quarq and fizik finishing kit and whatever Reynolds wheels I fancy on the day. I’ll probably favour the 46 AERO for the combo of light and aero.
