Feature – Jennifer Holden Q & A
1. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
Jennifer: I’m planning on starting my season properly at BUCS track in March, although I’ll probably do a couple of warm up events before that.
2. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Jennifer: My team is focusing on the Women’s Team Series and a few of the National Series Races, but honestly I’m personally probably aiming for Ryedale among others because I’m quite a small person so it’s not as hard as it might be.
3. How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training?
Jennifer: A bit of both really. You need the endurance to be able to race properly in the season, but there is no reason to be good at riding slowly for four hours… So I tend to go to the track twice a week to keep that top end simmering away over the winter.
4. What was your favourite Xmas present?
Jennifer: My favourite present would definitely have to be the coffee machine from my boyfriend for my room in uni, it was really hard not having one last term!
5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet?
Jennifer: Wrap up and get wet, because being inside would drive me crazy. We’re in England after all, being a fair weather cyclist is quite difficult. My best tip would have to be, get used to it, its not that bad, just make sure your fingers and toes keep warm, that’s worse than anything else because once they’re cold the only way to warm them up is in the shower.
6. If you could do any race in the world including the best ones in the world etc, what would it be and why?
Jennifer: Probably the Olympics, that’s got so much meaning to someone when you can say you’ve competed in the Olympics, even non cyclists know you mean business.
7. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
Jennifer: Coffee definitely, and probably ham.. I always crave it after a hard ride!
8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
Jennifer: Bloodhound Gang – The Bad Touch… it’s an awful song and I absolutely love it!
9. If given the option, would you prefer normal brakes or disc brakes on your road bike?
Jennifer: Normal brakes definitely. In my opinion everyone needs to be on the same thing in a race for predictability or it’ll get a lot more dangerous, especially in the wet.
10. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it?
Jennifer: My race bike is the Felt AR3 which is Ultegra spec. Honestly, I don’t have favourite bits, it’s a means to an end! I’m intending to do a bit of upgrading in the near future though so that may change.
