Feature – Steven Lawley Q & A
1. What was your highlight from 2015?
Steven: My highlights for 2015 which was my first proper season would be winning a sprint prime in the RAS and coming 6th on a stage. I finished 21st overall. Winning the Scottish national Road Race champs too was a big highlight. I also had top 20’s in Premier Calendar races and broke one of Graham Obree’s Scottish 10 time trial records after which he sent me a nice tweet. Working full time in forestry made it difficult to progress higher though I have decided to go full time for the 2016/17 seasons.
2. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
Steven: First proper race for me will be the Tour of the Reservoir as that is a good race for me that. I got a top 25 last year doing the second day in one gear due to Di2Â issues.
3. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Steven: Targets for me would be a top 5 overall in the RAS – having a team to ride it with permitting. Podium in selected Premier Calendar RR’s and possibly have another go at some Tour Series races having a track background.
I also had top 20’s in Premier Calendar races and broke one of Graham Obree’s Scottish 10 time trial records after which he sent me a nice tweet.
4. How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training?
Steven: Will spend my time until racing by doing a variety of cycling focusing on my strengths and weaknesses. Riding cyclo-cross has been fun!
5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet?
Steven: If it rains? I live in Scotland so just have to get on with it even if it means a split session of road/track/turbo
6. If you could do any race in the world including the best ones in the world etc, what would it be and why?
Steven: Any race for me would probably be Milan San Remo as it just looks the toughest out there! Weather included!
7. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
Steven: I couldn’t do without my Nutella!
8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
Steven: Has to be some 70’s/80’s power rock ballads!
9. Who is the professional in the peloton on the tele who you enjoy watching race most and why?
Steven: I like to watch Peter Sagan just because he always looks to be having fun.
10. If given the option, would you prefer normal brakes or disc brakes on your road bike?
Steven: I like disc brakes as I find them more reliable performance especially in the wet.
