Feature – James Boyman Q & A
1. What was your highlight from 2015 and who are you riding for in 2016?
James: Thanks to Jon (Trainsharp Cycle Coaching) and his contacts, I’ve managed to secure a contract with Neon Velo Cycling Team for 2016. I’m pretty unknown on the Road Race scene as 2015 was my first year racing again and I only did three road races. My highlight on the road would have to be winning the Tour of the Milburys in May. I turned up not knowing what to expect and managed second in the TT before a late solo attack won me the road race and the overall. Getting 5th in the National 10 was my Time Trial highlight.
2. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
James: My season starts on the 12th March with a local (H10/8) 10 mile TT. This will give me an idea of my fitness before the team launch and training weekend the following week and then the Chorley GP.
3. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
James: I’d like to target some of the harder Elite Road Races while helping out team mates in the others. I’d also like a good showing the National TT Champs, National 10 and 25. Riding the RAS in May will be an amazing experience too.
4.How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training?
James: I’m lucky enough to be going out to Mallorca with the legend that is Richard Prebble on the 19th Feb for 10 days of what I hope will be warm, sunny miles. I’m getting a bit bored of the wind, rain and cold now but needs must and Trainsharp keep the sessions interesting. I’m training with power now which makes a huge difference. I’ll be trying to lose a bit more weight too. Just can’t help myself with cake!
5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet?
James: I haven’t skipped a session due to the weather yet, although that did result in me ending up of the floor in the ice once. No harm done though. Nobody likes the rain, but invest in decent clothing and it’s bearable.
6. If you could do any race in the world including the best ones in the world etc, what would it be and why?
James: Tour de France – Classic. I grew up watching it so it has to be the Tour. Riding Paris-Roubaix and Flanders would also be epic!
7. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
James: Bananas. I eat at least one every day. Squash is a must too.
8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
James: I normally warm up on the road but being a huge Muse fan I imagine that will get used this year.
9. Who is the professional in the peloton on the tele who you enjoy watching race most and why?
James: Easy. The hero that is Fabian Cancellara. Huge power, huge class, huge man. I love the way he wins races too, just riding everyone off his wheel. The stuff of legends. I grew up racing with Ian Stannard and Alex Dowsett, amongst others, and it’s incredible to see the riders that they’ve become. Stannard is a beast of a man and Alex can test with the best in the world.
10. If given the option, would you prefer normal brakes or disc brakes on your road bike?
James: Never ridden discs but not a fan of the look. That’s all that matters right?
11. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it?
James: The team are sponsored by Giant St Pauls. We’re lucky enough to be riding the TCR Advanced Pro 1 with full Dura Ace and Giants own SLR wheelset. Again thanks to Jon at Trainsharp I now have SRM’s so they’ll be going on too. The team is also sponsored by Oakley, H2BikeRun, Pedros Bike Care, KapzGuru and KitBrix.
