News – Raleigh GAC’s World Champion
The road racing season in Britain has yet to take off when it comes to racing for the British UCI teams but there is still plenty shout about especially for the Raleigh GAC team who’s new signing for 2016, Sebastián Mora carried the team name to a World title in London.
With two riders in the race, Seb and Morgan Kniesky, Raleigh-GAC were hopeful that one or both of them would earn a place on the podium. Sebastián is the 2015 European Scratch race champion, something the team are very proud of having managed to get his signature for the coming road season.
Team owner Cherie Pridham admits that Sebastián was a significant signing for Team Raleigh GAC with the type of racing we have in Britain, ie, the circuit races in events such as the Tour Series.
“Seb brings his international experience to our young team in 2016†says Cherie. “He’s fast and super motivated to win. It is so exciting to see this guy in sprints.â€
Exciting indeed as Sebastián blew everyone away from the team boss to fans and rivals, on the track in London to be crowned World champion.
Sebastián got in a small group that took a lap after another four riders including British rider Chris Latham had just done the same. With a lap taken, he was still in the game but then he forced another escape away and take another lap. There was so much going on at that point with attacks and counter attacks, it was difficult to know who was leading the race with six riders on the same lap but Sebastián settled that with a lone move.
The event can be a sprinters race but not this one as Sebastián attacked with five to go and was nothing short of sensational as he gapped some very good quality riders behind him to have plenty of time to celebrate a career first.
It was Spain’s first World title in the Scratch race, and Sebastián said afterwards (from Biciciclismo ) “I am very happy because after so much training, you get that result. For the first time to be World champion. They say a curse says the champion of Europe cannot be a world champion; I have broken that curse!”
“I now wear the rainbow jersey with great pride. I had trust and confidence in myself. I was very focused. I said ‘this is the time if I want to be world champion’ and it went very well. I enjoyed that last lap, but it was not until I crossed the finish line that I believed I had won” he added.
Raleigh GAC’s other rider in the race, Morgan Kniesky, a three time World champion, was 16th. Both riders will be racing again at the World Championships in London.
