News – Sarah Storey’s Championship Goals

2016 Para-cycling Track World. Championships. 17 – 20 March - Montichiari (Italy)

The final track sessions and media day took place this week ahead of the Paracycling World Championships taking place in Italy next week.

One of the stars, if not THE star of the championships is Great Britain’s Sarah Storey. Speaking to Jennifer Bennett, Sarah gave her preview of the events she is doing at the championships.

500m TT – Thursday
This is a bonus event for me given the change of factors for Rio. Although I have been a four time world champion in the event and am reigning Paralympic Champ. The new factors mean there will likely need to be a new world record from a C5 to win this gold medal at the Paralympics and whilst I can go quick, I don’t focus on this event for training at all.

Having good speed is important though and as part of a lead out train on the road, I use my speed from the track all the time. The conditions in the Montichiari velodrome will be interesting as last time I raced there in March and it was rarely warmer than 20 degrees!

Saturday 19th - Individual Pursuit and Scratch Race
The IP qualifying and finals take place before a late afternoon Scratch race. It is a big day on the bike that really suits me and I am looking forward to riding both these events. I have been feeling stronger than ever in some of my IP drills in training but the conditions will dictate scheduling when we arrive.

The Scratch race sees myself and Liz Saul take to the boards for GB so it will be great to have a team mate and share tactics as I haven’t had this before in Paracycling competition. I have been an able-bodied national champ in the Points race and supported team mates to win other bunch races as well as finishing well in the London Six Day in shorter versions of the scratch, so hopefully my experience will help Liz and I can get great results here too. It would be great to see Liz qualify for Rio.
