Report – Surrey League RR

By Graham Robins | Sunday 13th March 2016

There were wins today for Jon Freeman (Paceline RT) and James Boyman (Neon Velo) at the latest Surrey Cycle Racing League races promoted by the Army Cycling Union and the Army Cycle Racing Team.

After a hastily change of course on Monday the organisers did well to find a new HQ and course in two days allowing the racing to go ahead. The course at Milland on the Hampshire West Sussex boarder included a 25% climb on each lap and the morning race for 3rd cats was seven laps of 7miles and a four mile run out neutralised section. The afternoon race was nine laps and the neutral section.

Once the racing got underway in the morning there were many attacks as riders tried in vain to get away on the fast dual carriageway section before they turned towards the two climbs in Rake and Milland itself. With just over a lap to go Jon Freeman seized the opportunity to get away and he quickly built a lead of twenty seconds over a group of six chasers.

At the bell Jon’s lead was steady and it looked possible the chasers would pull him back but Jon held on to claim a hard earned victory over Christopher Zappala (Dulwich Paragon) but his lead was cut in half at the finish line.

The afternoon race rolled away the HQ in the centre of Liss and headed onto the course in Rake four miles away. Once the race got underway Peter Allan (Windy Milla) made his move and as the race completed the opening lap he had a lead of 20secs from two riders and then the remainder of the bunch. Allan maintained his lead for another lap while the chasers began to organise themselves.

On the next section down the dual carriage way the group come back together but straight away another attack goes away and this time its nine riders who manage to break free and the n a little bit later a tenth riders bridges the gap. By the mid race distance the ten had been whittled down to three with two small groups following with gasps of a few seconds between them.

With two laps to go a strong group of five riders begin to put time into the bunch as it starts to splinter as the climb takes its toll The leading group now includes James Boyman (Neon Velo), Robert Omond (PM), Warren Jesse (PM), Dylan Thomas (VC Meudon) and original leader Peter Allan, these five now have a ninety second gap over a chasing group and 1min 48secs to the bunch.

On the penultimate lap Boyman makes his move up the climb and once over quickly builds a lead of over a minute while the two smaller groups reform.

Boyman cross the line with a winning margin of 1min 34secs over Oliver Jedrej (Dulwich Paragon) and David Murrell (London Phoenix).
