MENS RACE

GC podium – Jonny McEvoy of NFTO (2nd),  Joe Fry of Pedal Heaven (1st) and Adria Moreno (Raleigh GAC) 3rd.

First year senior Joe Fry of Pedal Heaven has won the Tour of Reservoir. The race for the GC came down to a mad sprint over the final kilometre after JLT Condor had controlled the race and he managed to get the gap he needed to take the Yellow winners jersey.

The race was a controlled affair, even on a course which could have seen the peloton in bits and after a frantic opening, a break went clear on the first of the smaller loops with last year’s overall winner Erick Rowsell (Madison Genesis) & his teammate Matt Cronshaw, Albert Torres (Raleigh GAC), Dexter Gardias (Pedal Heaven), Graham Briggs, Adam Kenway and Ryan Perry (Metaltek Kuota), James Lowlsey Williams (NFTO), Jeremy Durrin (Neon Velo) and Jez McCann.

The men line up in Blanchland for the start in the afternoon.

The peloton had sat up and it was a looking like this early break would dominate the race before the GC battled hotted up.

It all went wrong though for the men in black who had race leader Tom Moses in the peloton as Graham Briggs up front crashed and so the next time we saw the race, JLT Condor were at the front and had the gap had down to 30 seconds. That was as close it got for a long long time as the break opened up a gap and the race stayed the same until the final two small laps of the course.

The climbs up Horsehoe pass in extreme cross winds had not yielded the race action many expected and it was on the climb up to Manor House on the small circuit where Erik Rowsell (Madison Genesis) exploded the break with a show of strength. Two stayed with him, Gardias and Torres and chasing was Ryan Perry after being distanced.

It was a surprise then to see Perry leading solo by over 50 seconds the next time we saw them three quarters of a lap later. The chasers, Rowsell, Torres and Gardias were all pulling turns but the medallist at last year’s British time trial championships was riding strong despite not having felt great all day.

Could he hold on for another lap? No was the answer but it was a close run thing as Rowsell again lit it up again late on the stage to chase him down as the Raleigh GAC led peloton closed in on the break. Rowsell was the only one of two riders to ‘survive’ and stay away, 25 seconds clear of the next rider, Dexter Gardias (Pedal Heaven) who won the KoM award.

The break having gone, the peloton has sat up and is in club run mode with the major teams represented in the move.

Making a great day for Pedal Heaven, James Gullen crossed the line third and then in sixth place, 32 seconds down on Rowsell was Joe Fry, his hand over his face as he could not believe he had won his first Prem in his first year as a senior.

The other GC contenders, Jonny McEvoy (NFTO) 35 seconds down, Adria Moreno (Raleigh GAC) on his wheel and then came Tom Moses (JLT Condor) in the same time but lost his podium place on countback.

An epic weekend with the worst weather for many a year was over and a youngster, Joe Fry, will never forget it but bigger things are surely on the horizon for this talented bike rider.

The men in black in control of the peloton keep the break at a few minutes with none of the men in front within three minutes of race leader Tom Moses.
