Startsheet: Friday sees many of the best cycling professionals start a three day battle on the roads of Yorkshire
![]() |
This Weekend: Tour de Yorkshire
The first of two major high ranking UCI races in Britain in 2016 for both men and women is this weekend in Yorkshire.
Whilst the women have a single stage event on the Saturday, the men have a three day event starting on Friday. The Tour de Yorkshire is a 2.1 UCI Europe Tour event and a new feature for 2016 will be the Tour de Yorkshire caravan, and race ambassadors who will travel ahead of the race and visit key points on the route, stopping to give out gifts and entertain spectators.
Stage 1: Beverley – Settle
The 2016 race will start in the beautiful East Yorkshire market town of Beverley as this stage takes the riders on a journey of market towns from East to West covering 187km and finishing in the town centre of Settle.
Stage 2 – Otley to Doncaster
Stage two marks an important milestone for the Tour de Yorkshire, as the women’s race will be held on exactly the same route as the men’s with the women starting in the morning and the men in the early afternoon. The route begins in Otley, home town of current women’s road World Champion Lizzie Armitstead and will take the riders on a stage of champions which will finish after 136.5km with a likely sprint finish in Doncaster.
Stage 3: Middlesbrough to Scarborough
The third and final day is the stage of Captain Cook, starting in his birthplace of Middlesbrough and finishing in the famous family seaside town of Scarborough. This stage will appeal to climbers as it includes six King of the Mountain classifications (KOM) over a 198km distance.
Teams
Eighteen teams will take to the start line in Beverley on Friday including five of the six British based UCI teams, Raleigh GAC, Madison Genesis, NFTO, JLT Condor and Team Wiggins.
In total, 38 riders on the provisional rider list have ridden in the Tour de France and 25 have taken part in all three Grand Tours. We will also see the welcome return of many riders who competed in last year’s Tour de Yorkshire including the winners of both men’s and women’s races.
Sir Bradley Wiggins will celebrate his birthday in Yorkshire as he prepares for the race with his Team Wiggins teammates, and last year’s winner, Team Sky’s Lars Petter Nordhaug, will be joining us again, as well as Pete Kennaugh, current British road champion, and Luke Rowe.
Australian team Orica GreenEDGE will bring British rider Adam Yates as well as Mathew Hayman, who cycling fans will instantly recognise as the winner of this year’s Paris-Roubaix. Orica GreenEDGE will also be bringing Caleb Ewan, Australian National Criterium Champion.
BMC will bring Rohan Dennis (former hour record holder and Tour de France yellow jersey wearer), as well as Ben Hermans who won Stage 3 of the Tour de Yorkshire last year.
Also returning to the race are Cofidis rider Nicolas Edet (winner of the overall King of the Mountain classification in 2015) and ever popular rider, Thomas Voeckler from Direct Energie. Dimension Data will bring Tour de France stage winner Steve Cummings, who will be joined by Bernie Eisel. Giant Alpecin are bringing Warren Barguil, Bert De Backer and Koen de Kort.
The men’s race will also see a very strong Yorkshire contingent, with ten riders. Racing for the Great Britain team will be Frazer Clacherty, Gabriel Cullaigh and Oliver Wood; JLT Condor bring Russ Downing, Graham Briggs and Tom Moses. Madison Genesis rider Tom Stewart will take part, as will NFTO’s Josh Edmondson, plus honorary Yorkshireman who lives in Skipton, One Pro Cycling’s Pete Williams. Joining Bradley Wiggins at Team Wiggins is Liam Holohan.
Perhaps the biggest attraction in the men’s tour is Sir Bradley Wiggins. Fresh from his incredible Madison world title alongside Mark Cavendish at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in London in March, Wiggins will be riding in his own team’s colours. Wiggins is just one of four riders from the Podium of the World Madison championships with Morgan Kniesky, Seb Mora, and Albert Torres (all Raleigh GAC) set to ride the race as well.
Women’s race
Perhaps the biggest name to take part in the festival of cycling lines up in the Asda Women’s Tour de Yorkshire on Saturday 30 April is Lizzie Armitstead.
World champion Lizzie Armitstead will be starting the Women’s race from her home town of Otley. Armitstead is in terrific form in 2016, with victories in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Strade Bianche, Trofeo Alfredo Binda and Tour of Flanders.
The women’s race, which offers one of the biggest prize funds in worldwide women’s cycling, boasts an impressive lineup, with Olympic team pursuit champion Dani King representing Wiggle High5 and Paralympic champion Dame Sarah Storey racing with her Podium Ambition Pro Cycling team.
