Cronshaw makes the break whilst Rowsell and Stewart stay safe on Tour de Yorkshire stage one as riders battle elements in opening stage

Team News – Madison Genesis
Matt Cronshaw made the first break on the opening stage of the Tour de Yorkshire, while general classification hopes Erick Rowsell and Tom Stewart remained safe and in contention despite testing conditions.
Following a performance branded as “perfect” by team manager Dave Povall, a total of five from eight Madison Genesis riders would finish in on the same time as stage winner Dylan Groenewegen (Team Lotto NL – Jumbo).
The 187km stage got off to a great start as Cronshaw made the opening break with five other riders. Early on they were allowed a lead of five minutes, but challenging conditions in the form of heavy rain showers, strong winds and leaden roads resulted in an ever-attentive peloton.
After some infighting, half of the break – including Cronshaw – was taken back by the bunch and after a concerted chase the rest were neutralised – albeit at the price of around a third of the peloton.
Five Madison Genesis riders remained on the right side of the split – Stewart, Rowsell, Gruff Lewis, Matt Holmes and Alex Blain – all of which will provide strength in numbers as the race progresses. Robbins, Gunman and Cronshaw all performed essential team roles, allowing the maximum amount of energy to be conserved ahead of a third stage that riders are relishing and fearing in equal measure.
Povall’s final assessment of the opening day’s racing was understandably upbeat. “We had a couple aims – one was to make the break and the other was to keep Erick and Tom safe for GC.
“Once Matt made that break it relieved a lot of pressure for the others. They could all do the domestique role from there for Tom and Erick and to a man they did it really well. A big pat on the back to every guy that had a Madison Genesis jersey on today – I’m very proud of them.”
