Doing a preview without knowing the confirmed team line ups from the UCI squads is perhaps a bit pointless but here’s a look anyway at who may be in the mix in Salisbury after a 110 hopefully hot miles around Salisbury.
On a circuit with a testing hill over Fovant Down but on largely fast roads, this race over 110 miles will see a selection by the end in Salisbury but unless there’s a surprise lone attack from a rider with great legs on the day, the race should be decided in a group sprint.
The teams, at least the UCI ones, will have eight riders each and that gives them options. Those without sprinters will want to see the race break up and may use up riders to put the hammer down over a climb Fovant Down to stop the sprinter teams from controlling the race.
Those teams with sprinters however may use their numbers to keep the race together and will then be relying on their fastmen to deliver the goods on the day. The candidates for victory are many. Sam Lowe for Team Wiggins for example can be fast on his day if he’s there at the end after a tough Tour of Yorkshire. The men in black have many possible victors but if you’re looking for a sprinter, then Graham Briggs or Russell Downing may well be in the mix, or should I say, are certain to be so!
At the Tour of Yorkshire, Madison Genesis had two riders in the top 20 showing that they have World Tour strength riders but should it come to a sprint, then there designated sprinter is perhaps Felix English or Alex Blain should he ride which I expect he will?
Perhaps Dan Fleeman of Metaltek Kuota will be doing this again in Wiltshire
The first Prems were won by NFTO with Edmund Bradbury and Ian Bibby and having seen Jonny McEvoy win bunch kicks before such as at DoonHame, perhaps it will be his turn to step up onto the top step of the podium.
Pedal Heaven have certainly stepped up this season with the likes of Joe Fry winning at Reservoir but who their designated sprinter will be I’m not sure. David McGowan is fast for example and Dexter Gardias won a stage at Totnes in a group sprint but we’ll need to see who they pick for the event.
The next team however do have some very fast riders; Raleigh GAC. Albert Torres for example was sixth on a stage of the Tour of Yorkshire and backed up by a rider in Seb Mora who was second on a stage of the Tour of Normandy. Of any team in Wiltshire, they seem to have the firepower should the race come down to a bunch kick with others like Andy Hawdon, winner at Colne last year, also no slouches in a gallop.
Of the rest of the entry, there is little doubt that there will be other teams in the mix as well like Metaltek Kuota who have had such an impact on the races already but in a bunch kick? The opportunity is certainly there for riders with the required top end to make a name for themselves if they can hang on in that front group on the day.
Fingers crossed the day is blessed with good weather after such bad weather affecting the racing so far.  (… continued after advert)
