News – Junioren Driedaagse van Axel (2.1)

In the three day, 4 stage Junior international stage race, the Driedaagse van Axel, Britain’s Reece Wood was 4th overall. Around twenty British riders started the race with only six finishers after three days of punctures and crashes in this 200 rider event.

Going into the final stage, Reece Wood was second overall at 9 seconds but Flanders hills, mud and torrential downpours had the field down to less than 40 at half distance. The top three on GC were marking each other constantly but for Reece, lady luck was not smiling on him and he punctured with about 20k to go.

A hard solo chase saw him get back on despite the leaders teams pushing hard to stop him re-joining. Unfortunately, on the 1.8 km cobbled climb to the finish, his earlier effort caught up with him and he lost a handful of seconds on the line to the podium contenders thus leaving himself in 4th on GC, and one very disappointed young rider.
