The Bill Miles Memorial Trophy (Nat B, E123, 80 Miles)

Matthew Nowell (Wheelbase Altura MGD) rode to a convincing victory in the Bill Miles Memorial Trophy Race, presented by Barnsley Road Club, riding clear with 40 miles to go and never looking back.

This prestigious trophy race, in honour of Barnsley Road Clubs founders in 1924 is held on one of the highest and most challenging courses in the UK, The Carlecotes Course. The riders completed 12 laps of a 6.4 mile Pennine circuit with the finish on top of Flight Hill above the Holme Valley, and ascending around 2500metres through the race.

The race was one of 4 seasons with bright sunshine, rain, hail and cloud. A real hard mans race. The difficult circuit and conditions meant that only 20 riders finished the 77 mile race out of the 58 starters.

Nowell thrived on the hilly circuit and attacked with around half of the race remaining and at one stage built up a lead of over five minutes. Behind a group of chasers formed, with five laps remaining but these were soon reeled in by the depleted bunch. Envelopmaster Giant Sheffields Jake Tanner, Connor Swift and Joseph Clark, Plus Metaltek Kuotas Ryan Perry worked together in stages to limit the losses to Nowell; but there was no holding Nowell back.

Nowell commented later that the back of the course was where the damage was done over the Brook Hill Lane climb where a tail wind supported him. After 4hrs 28 mins, the 19-year-old from Northwich had time to celebrate and finished with a three minutes and two seconds winning margin.

He won the Bill Miles Memorial Trophy and a £300 first prize.

Behind Connor Swift (Envelopmaster Giant Sheffield) was fastest up the finishing climb to claim second ahead of Ryan Perry (Metaltek Kuota RT) in third. First Junior across the line was Eugene Cross from SSLL Racing Team.

The Barnsley Road Races Support Race (Regional B Cat 34, 55 miles)

Louis Szymanski
Louis Szymanski (above) from ABC Centreville carved out a dominant victory in the Barnsley Road Club Road Races Support Race to win by two minutes and makes it 3 wins in 6 races in his first year of racing.

Barnsley Road Clubs organised a support race for category 3 and 4 entrants in a warm up for its Bill Miles Memorial Trophy elite event later in the day. The 56 strong field competed over the Flight Hill circuit, a tough and uncompromising circuit with no place to hide. The parcour goes either up the Dunford Rd climb –a mile long climb c 8% – over a supremely fast plateau along Flight Hill which traditionally has extreme cross winds, then down into a block headwind on the twisty descent of Penistone Road.

Very early on attacks started to begin, prominent at the begging was Barnsley Road Clubs very own Anthony Bromley who pushed the pace up. Many other riders tried to force the group to split, but at the 3rd lap of 12 however, Louis Szymanski from ABC Centreville appeared to have made the difference.

Szymanski, who is a North West based rider, has had a string of early season victories in his first year of racing and will certainly be picked up by a team somewhere along the line. The racing passed through with a large chase group forming throughout to try to bring Szymanski back, however this was mostly in vein with Szymanski maintaining a 2 minute lead until the finish. A hotly contested sprint finish settled the top ten, with less than 20 seconds between them.
