Feature Report – Tour Series Stoke
Event Press Release
JLT Condor presented by Mavic continued a dominant 2016 Pearl Izumi Tour Series with their fifth round victory of the season, added to by their seventh straight individual victory thanks to Chris Lawless.
The victory in Stoke-on-Trent, European City of Sport for 2016, moves JLT Condor into an eight point lead over Madison Genesis, who themselves are four points clear of Team Raleigh GAC, with just three rounds to come in Stevenage, Croydon and Portsmouth.
The individual win for Lawless, his second of the season, moves him into three Tour Series victories, the tenth rider in history to have three or more victories.
The Wigan rider also took the Brother Fastest Lap, with a 1:52.007 around the 1.4-kilometre circuit, averaging 45kph. In a fast paced race, Lawless headed his companions in a four rider break, with Rory Townsend taking second ahead of Alistair Slater and Gruff Lewis.
In the women’s Matrix Fitness Grand Prix Series, it was Claire Rose (above) of the Podium Ambition presented by Club La Santa who was the fastest – with the fastest lap and the race win, on her first ever appearance in the Series.
The win, along with a strong performance by teammates Grace Garner (4th) and Dame Sarah Storey (7th) earned the defending champions their first round win of 2016, and moves them to within 13-points of Matrix Fitness Grand Prix Series leaders Drops Cycling.
Alice Barnes and Annie Simpson both finished in the top five for the leaders, but with third place rider Rebecca Wormersley in 23rd, their lead was cut with three rounds to go.
At the top of the individual standings defending champion Nikki Juniper moved to the top of the pile, sprinting to the runners-up spot behind Rose from the front group. Juniper’s ascent was aided by a late crash with two laps to go that removed Annasley Park from the race, leaving her six points behind the Team Ford EcoBoost rider.
Team Breeze’s Park (pictured leading below) did hold onto her lead in the Sprints classification despite the crash that ended her race.
In the final round of the Northern Division competition for the men’s guest teams, Wheelbase Altura MGD capped off the four event mini-Series with another win, putting them two-points clear of Planet X Northside and giving them the trophy, presented by Tour Series Race Director Mick Bennett.
In the Chain Reaction Cycles Points competition, Rory Townsend is now 18-points clear of Lawless, who edged ahead of teammate Jon Mould, who now lies ten points behind in third.
Highlights of the Stoke-on-Trent event are on ITV4 at 2200 on Friday 3 June, with a repeat at 1100 on Saturday 4 June. You can catch all of the programmes from the 2016 Pearl Izumi Tour Series on demand via the ITV Player catch-up service.

The Men’s Tour Series So Far
Way back on May 12, the Pearl Izumi Tour Series kicked off with a very tactical battle on the Isle of Man (Ramsey) where Chris Lawless was the first of the JLT team to start a winning streak in the individual classification that has yet to be broken after six rounds.
The British rider beat World Champion on the track Seb Mora (Raleigh GAC) to the line with Dale Appleby in third. Lawless’s team won the team award for both rounds that night (crit and team time trial) and since then, the team managed by John Herety have held onto their lead despite team wins for Pedal Heaven, Madison Genesis and Raleigh GAC.
The Series though has had one major star rider, Jon Mould. Of the six rounds so far, Mould has won four, three of them being the last ones held (Redditch, Aberystwyth and Durham). In Motherwell he sprinted to victory ahead of Albert Torres (Raleigh GAC) whilst in Redditch, he sprinted clear of Jack Pullar (Pedal Heaven) and Albert Torres (Raleigh GAC) who recorded his team’s third top three finish of the series.
Mould (above winning at Motherwell) then went to his home country of Wales for the round in Aberyswyth and there in the rain he sprinted to yet another victory to equal the record of the most wins with Ed Clancy.
The only riders to get a look in at getting their hands in the air so far are Graham Briggs (Edinburgh, pictured below)) and Lawless who won the first round. Tom Stewart of Madison Genesis however was in the box seat for the win in Durham this week but a freak mechanical with a lap and half to go saw his chance disappear and the lone chaser, Jon Mould, took the win instead.
Lucky perhaps but then Mould may have caught Stewart on that final lap and taken the victory and of course, he also made his own luck by being in the position to win if something happened to Stewart which unfortunately for the Yorkshire rider, it did. Either way, against very strong opposition, Mould has shown he’s the best ever Tour Series rider in 2016.
So here we are in Stoke and the teams are going into battle on a technical and tough course to see if anyone can break the stranglehold that the men in black have on the series so far.
Raleigh-GAC, one of four teams to win a round’s team classification so far.
With most of the teams running the same riders for all the rounds with very little rotation, all the riders competing are now either dialled into the series and what they need to do or as they say in Ireland, ‘jiggered’ after four weeks on the road. Durham was the best round by far with a very attacking round seeing the riders spread out around the course – what will we see in Stoke on Trent on Thursday night!
We’ll see who belongs to what camp tonight!
