News: Top Women’s Teams to Ride Curlew Cup

Entries for the Curlew Cup are nearing the 100 rider mark just over two weeks from the race, with a number of the country’s leading teams having signed up in the last few days.

The Curlew Cup, a round of the National Women’s Series, takes place on June 19th, the final day of the three-day Cyclone Festival of Cycling, based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Northumberland.

The Drops Cycling Team has announced an eight rider team, including newly crowned National Junior Champion, Ellie Dickinson. Also included are Lucy Shaw, who last month competed in the Women’s Tour of California and Annie Simpson, who is enjoying a successful return to the road after a spell concentrating on Mountain Bike and Cyclo-Cross racing.

Dickinson is also holding second place in the National Women’s Series and will be looking for a strong ride in the Curlew Cup to consolidate her place and possibly close down series leader, Nikki Juniper.

Meanwhile, Juniper, who is also the reigning National Circuit Race champion, will be leading the challenge from Team Ford EcoBoost, who have entered a nearly full-strength team. Juniper has two wins and a second place to her credit from the first three rounds of the series and will be looking to extend her lead at the Curlew Cup with another win.

Reaction: Beaumont Trophy Organiser Peter Harrison said: “We’ve toughened up the course for the Curlew Cup this year and we are delighted to see such a large and high quality entry preparing to support the event. The riders will be tackling three laps of 22.3 miles, the same course as used in the men’s race, with three ascents of the Ryals climb, a first for the women’s race. We hope this additional challenge will produce some really exciting racing.”
