Feature Report: Tour Series Stevenage

Event Press Release

JLT Condor and Drops Cycling continue winning runs in Tour Series Stevenage

There may have been a new venue for the Pearl Izumi Tour Series in Stevenage and a one-off later start time for a twilight event, but there were familiar names atop the podium in both the men and women’s events with respective Series leaders JLT Condor presented by Mavic and Drops Cycling taking a win a piece.

0_TS_StevenageReport16

Jon Mould showed he can win bunch kicks as well winning his fifth round out of eight so far in this series. Words fail me to describe this achievement.

Not content with taking the all-important team wins on the night, both squads also took the individual wins too. Alice Barnes followed in the wheeltracks of her elder sister Hannah with a race win in the Matrix Fitness Grand Prix Series to lead a sweep of the top positions for her team, while it was Jon Mould again in the Pearl Izumi Tour Series – his fifth win of the 2016 Series – but this time coming from a bunch sprint.

Video Interview

Mould had started the Series with five wins to his name, three behind teammate and Olympic champion Ed Clancy, but now with two races remaining sits on ten career victories after his wins in Motherwell, Redditch, Aberystwyth, Durham and now Stevenage.

Behind Mould it was NFTO’s Johnny McEvoy, swiftly followed across the line by JLT Condor riders Graham Briggs and Chris Lawless, and the all-important fourth rider being Ed Clancy in eighth.

Alice Barnes showed that it doesn’t have to end in a bunch kick and her corning was just superb. A solo win not surprising!

That gave JLT Condor their sixth win of the Series, their 25th ever, ahead of Pedal Heaven and Madison Genesis. Thus while the men in black, who since Round One on the Isle of Man have been the men in red and white, continue to Croydon and Portsmouth with a ten point advantage, behind just five points separates the teams in second, third and fourth, with Pedal Heaven now one point ahead of Team Raleigh GAC for the podium spot.

Women’s Race

Read a separate report with rider/team reactions here from Gordon Wiseman

With a large number of points on offer at both remaining rounds, the women’s Matrix Fitness Grand Prix Series remains open, with Drops Cycling’s 1-2-3 helping them to a maximum score, but both defending champions Podium Ambition and Ford Ecoboost within striking range, should they enjoy a similarly good evening.

Riders roll away from the start at 6.30pm

The foundations for Drops Cycling clean sweep of the top positions came in the form of a dominant performance by Alice Barnes, who as in the London Nocturne at the weekend single-handedly dismantled the field after half distance, to win alone by over a minute.

Behind was a large 30 rider group on the fast, flat Stevenage circuit, and it was two more Drops riders who sprinted clear with Rebecca Durrell and Laura Massey in second and third, repeating the trio’s 1-2-3 of the Lincoln Grand Prix, albeit on a very different type of course.

Behind Matrix Fitness’ Harriet Owen took fourth, ahead of Grace Garner and Emily Kay, who will both represent Great Britain in the Aviva Women’s Tour.

0_TS_StevenageReport04

The pace was on from the moment the TV moto sped away

In the women’s points competition, Nikki Juniper took the lead, benefiting from the absence of leader Annasley Park who was sidelined to recover from her Stoke-on-Trent crash with one eye on her place in next week’s Aviva Women’s Tour. With two rounds to go, Juniper, Park and Barnes are split by just five points, with twenty available.

Watching Barnes corner was superb

Durrell is delighted at second behind her teammate Barnes ….

0_TS_StevenageReport20

But not as delighted as Laura Massey was making it a 1-2-3 for Drops.

MEN’S

The men’s event saw a fast and frantic race from the flag drop, with the ensuing steady whittling down of the field ensuring few riders ever built much of a lead, and ultimately only 22 finished on the leading lap after 53 circuits.

Chris Lawless won all three Chain Reaction Cycles Sprints on the night, but was closely marked by jersey wearer Rory Towsend, so the JLT Condor rider could only trim the lead to eight points, with the competition now looking to be decided between the duo.

The men start their very fast hour of racing around Stevenage Old Town

Lawless did however pick up the Brother Fastest Lap, with a 1:09.808 effort.

In the second event of the Southern Guest team competition, Richardsons Trek made it two wins from two, ahead of Catford CC Equipe Banks, with two more events to go in Croydon and Portsmouth.

Jon Mould, win number 5 in the 2016 Tour Series but sadly, the Fastest Lap award still eludes him …

Highlights of the Stevenage event are shown on ITV4 at 2000 on Tuesday 7 June, with a repeat the following morning at 1045. The programmes from every round of the 2016 Pearl Izumi Tour Series are available on demand via the ITV Hub catch-up service.

The penultimate rounds of the men and women’s competitions take place on Tuesday evening in Croydon with the Matrix Fitness Grand Prix Series event starting at 1830 and the elite men’s race at 2000.

The final week of the 2016 Pearl Izumi Tour Series kicks off in Stevenage with men’s and women’s racing – VeloUK is here with updates on the event and report & results following the race.

StevenageCircuitTS_web

THE SERIES SO FAR

Way back on May 12, the Pearl Izumi Tour Series kicked off with a very tactical battle on the Isle of Man (Ramsey) where Chris Lawless was the first of the JLT team to start a winning streak in the individual classification that has yet to be broken after SEVEN rounds.

In Ramsey, the British rider beat World Champion on the track Seb Mora (Raleigh GAC) to the line with Dale Appleby in third. Lawless’s team won the team award for both rounds that night (crit and team time trial) and since then, the team managed by John Herety and with Dean Downing as the ‘Tour Series DS’ have held onto their lead despite team wins for Pedal Heaven, Madison Genesis and Raleigh GAC.

The Series though has had one major star rider, Jon Mould. Of the six rounds so far, Mould has won four, three of them being the last ones held (Redditch, Aberystwyth and Durham). In Motherwell he sprinted to victory ahead of Albert Torres (Raleigh GAC) whilst in Redditch, he sprinted clear of Jack Pullar (Pedal Heaven) and Albert Torres (Raleigh GAC) who recorded his team’s third top three finish of the series.

Mould then went to his home country of Wales for the round in Aberyswyth and there in the rain he sprinted to yet another victory to equal the record of the most wins with Ed Clancy.

The only riders to get a look in at getting their hands in the air so far are Graham Briggs (Edinburgh) and Lawless who won the first round and the last one held (7). Tom Stewart of Madison Genesis however was in the box seat for the win in Durham last week but a freak mechanical with a lap and half to go saw his chance disappear and the lone chaser, Jon Mould, took the win instead.

Lucky perhaps but then Mould may have caught Stewart on that final lap and taken the victory and of course, he also made his own luck by being in the position to win if something happened to Stewart which unfortunately for the Yorkshire rider, it did. Either way, against very strong opposition, Mould has shown he’s the best ever Tour Series rider in 2016 whilst Chris Lawless is not far behind after his solo win in Stoke and victory in every other podium classification on the night!

So here we are in Stevenage and the teams are going into battle on a technical and fast and from the map, straightward pan flat course to see if anyone can break the stranglehold that the men in black have on the series so far.
