Tom Stewart of Madison Genesis winning Velothon Wales

Madison Genesis will be bringing with them one of the riders of the season, so far, in 26 year old Tom Stewart. Stewart followed up a strong showing in the Tour de Yorkshire at the start of May with back-to-back wins in the Lincoln GP and Velothon Wales, with a team win in the Edinburgh round of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series sandwiched in-between.

Only mechanical trouble prevented him from then going on to a solo win at the Durham round of the televised city-centre series, whilst an individual second place helped underpin the team’s win at the Croydon round.

Of course, a cycling team is about more than one man and Stewart will be lining up alongside five very strong riders, including Alex Blain who claimed the individual win in the final round of the Tour Series, helping clinch second overall in the series for the team in the process.

Looking ahead at the race, Tom Stewart said: “The Beaumont is a race I always enjoy. I’ve had good results there before but also done poorly there. It’s a race that can be unpredictable and difficult to read. A hard and selective course suits an attacking rider but it has still come down to a (reduced) bunch sprint before. We’ll be going there with a strong team to take on the race. It’s a UCI 1.2 level race with some strong teams and it’s the week before the nationals. I’m expecting a very hard day!”

Organiser Peter Harrison said: “Madison Genesis have, in Tom Stewart, one of the favourites to win the Beaumont Trophy. He’s got all the right attributes to win in the kind of difficult terrain the Beaumont throws at riders, he was second last year and he has a strong team behind him too. I can’t wait to see them in action.”
