Report/Result: Beaumont Trophy

New Zealander Dion Smith broke clear on the final lap of Stamdfordham to win the Beaumont Trophy on Sunday.

Beaumont_07

The day began with a small group going clear and whilst it was active in the peloton, the gap continued to grow on the opening lap. A chase group soon formed but then a chase was organised with Pedal Heaven, NFTO and Raleigh GAC among the teams bringing the gap down until around halfway the race was together and it was game on. Several strong groups formed but there was a lack of commitment and or organisation and so the race came together or what was left as by now, a lot of riders had slid out the back for good.

Daniel Bigham (PlanetX-Northside) and Madison Genesis’s Matt Holmes made a significant move as the race entered its last 20km loop with conditions worsening as the threatened rain had arrived many hours earlier than expected. Liam Holohan and Dion Smith bridged across and on the fast roads leading to the finish, it was the attack by Smith that stuck which saw him get his hands in the air. The sprint for second though was much tighter with Holohan getting the verdict over Bigham who had his biggest result to-date.

As the race approached halfway, the teams started to flex their muscles with Pedal Heaven, NFTO and Raleigh GAC putting riders at the front to bring the race back together

Once together, the attacking continued, this the third up the Ryals with an Irish rider Damian Shaw (Irish champion)  leading a select group by a few seconds and a lot of splits behind that (see below)
