This year sees the 31st running of the Otley Cycle Races and it once again promises to be the biggest edition yet. The traditionally massive crowds and street party atmosphere which this event generates every year make it a very special place to spend a mid-summer’s evening in Britain.
Bananas make a welcome return to elite UK cycling as Fyffes are the headline sponsor of this year’s event bringing back memories of the late 80’s and 90’s when Bananas fuelled teams co-sponsored by Raleigh, Falcon cycles and Met Helmets.
The Pinsent Masons Otley Women’s GP has the biggest field ever for this event with almost 100 riders. Nicola Juniper will be trying to add to her points tally as leader of the Women’s National Series but other star riders like Alice Barnes who finished second on Sunday behind her sister Hannah in the women’s Road race champs and Eleanor Dickinson the national junior road race champion will fancy their chances too.
Alongside these senior riders there are two of the top youth women riders competing. Pfeiffer Georgi and Anna Docherty will both fancy their chances in this race. These youth riders compete week in and week out on these close circuits and will not be fazed at all by the large field and the tricky corners.
For the men’s race, the Property Development GP there is a field of 120 riders lined up. Whilst last year’s winner Dan McLay is not riding as he prepares for the Tour de France, former winners Scott Thwaites, Graham Briggs, Ian Wilkinson and Russ Downing will be there and trying to add another win to their palmares. Thwaites, riding for German team Bora Argon 18, is in tremendous form after being right up there at last weekend’s national road race championships and winning at Ilkley last Wednesday.
Graham Briggs too showed a clean pair of heels to everyone a couple of weeks ago at Doncaster and will be keen to impress on this one of his favourite circuits. They will not have it their own way though because the reigning circuit race champion Ian Bibby is coming with his strong NFTO team and Raleigh GAC see their Spanish World Champion Sebastian Mora return along with his teammate Albert Torres (a former world champion) and Morgan Kniesky (a three time former world champion).
As with the women’s race, these established senior riders will have to contend with this year’s raft of audacious teenagers, scared of nothing with talent and determination to spare. Watch in particular the VCUK team of Rob Scott, Harry Hardcastle and Tom Pidcock. Tom was a double stage winner at Acht Van Bladel on the weekend and second overall and also part of a break with Scott Thwaites that lapped the field at Ilkley last week so good form for the youngester that won the support race last year.
Racing starts at 18.00 with the youth races followed at 18.45 by the Women’s race. 19.30 sees the local amateurs take to the circuit for the Chevin Cycles Classic race and then at 20.30 the Elite men embark on what promises once again to be an epic show of speed, elegance and wheel to wheel combat.  … continued after advert
