Report: Otley Grand Prix
Chris Lawless and Charline Joiner were the big winners at the Otley Town Centre circuit races on Wednesday night
It was .Joiner who celebrated first in the Women’s event in bright sunshine before the men’s race which was a real nail biter won by Chris Lawless. After rain for pretty much most of the day, the skies brightened up for the Youth races which started proceedings before the Women’s race at 6.45.
The riders in this national series event wasted no time in getting going with lots of little attacks seeing breaks escape. Alice Barnes of Drops Cycling, second on Sunday in the Women’s RR Championship had a go as did Hannah Payton (Drops) with Lizzie Holden. The stripes of British champion Nikki Juniper were easily spotted at the front as well before a small break of six escaped.
They quickly opened up a gap and with the main teams represented, success for them looked on the cards. And so it was with one of the favourites for the win, Joiner gapping her rivals to win the race from her young teammate
They stayed clear, and in the sprint Joiner took the win by inches from team-mate Henrietta Colborne with Rose Osborne (Drops Cycling) in third.

Mens Race
The men’s support race then followed (won by Theo Hartley ) before the final race of the evening in front of a packed town centre. There was to be no sighting lap for the riders eager to race and quickly the attacks came and went. The frantic nature of the race saw a crash and the race neutralised as an ambulance was on the course.
Once the injured had been picked up and brought back to the start, the race began and at the sharp end of the race, Raleigh GAC were one of the teams keen to get away but when a small move escaped with no less than four JLT Condor in it (Tom Moses, Chris Lawless, Graham Briggs and Ali Slater) along with Taylor Gunman and Matt Cronshaw (Madison Genesis), Jonny McEvoy, champion Ian Bibby and Harry Tanfield (Pedal Heaven), some of the teams and favourites had missed it such as Raleigh GAC.
The leaders got a gap of 30 seconds plus quickly and the peloton looked powerless to stop it staying away with the number of laps to go in double figures. Raleigh GAC had missed the boat big time and it was looking like a bad day in the office for them and Madison Genesis too were not happy with the break despite two in it so they had numbers on the front at one stage.
The break led by Tom Moses as Chris Lawless sits in awaiting the sprint …
Morgan Kniesky of Raleigh GAC leads the chase for the break with a  lap to go ahead of Albert Torres with World Champion Seb Mora waiting for his moment.
But the gap was holding until with five laps to go the drag race between break and peloton became a thriller. Raleigh GAC put numbers on the front, burning up riders to bring the leaders back. The gap was coming down but would it come down fast enough? Into the last lap and the leaders still had 15 seconds or so but the answer to the question was yes, the break was caught with half a lap to go.
Raleigh GAC had few riders left to help World Champion Seb Mora after a chase that showed their strength whilst the men in black had numbers and the experience of the circuit. Russell Downing led Chris Lawless out whilst Seb Mora had Albert Torres, both racing the circuit for the first time and the sprint for the win was won by Lawless from Mora with Felix English of Madison Genesis in third and Downing 4th.
