(by Dot Tilbury)

Conditions were unexpectedly good at the NSC last Tuesday night for round ten of Team RL360 Isle of Man’s youth league. Fortunately, the heavy showers that were passing over the Island at the time completely missed Douglas and the 263 competitors were able to enjoy their racing with the sun on their backs.

In the novices race Jasper Whalley outsprinted Jack Monaghan to bag maximum points for the third week running and move into the top slot in the overall standings. Leading girl Charley Skillen was a solid third and Charlie Christian overcame Daniel Coates and Evie Lund in the tussle for fourth. Harry Tummon grabbed seventh ahead of James Cope and Lewis De Backer, with Daisy Teare overtaking Orry McSevney in the closing stages to round off the top ten.

Bouncing back from his defeat in the previous round, Finbar McSevney edged out main rival Carter Kneale to reclaim the number one position in the born 2011 and later age group. Bobby Kewley led fellow chasers Joel Prentice and Bobby Kerruish home for third, while first girl Abigail Cowell outran Macaulay Teare for sixth. Dylan Honeyman headed Charlie Dormer, Bernat Munoz-Fite and Poppy Clayton over the line for eighth, with newcomer Lenny Bumfrey an impressive 12th in a large field of 39 riders.

Brad Le Geyt had to work hard to fend off strong challenges from Conor Madsen-Mygdal and Stanley Kinnish on the way to taking the top honours in the born 2010 class. Harrison Skillan took fourth ahead of fellow pursuers Daniel Minay, Lula Kinnish, Ffinlo Thomas, Archie Mulholland and Illiam Thomas, while Hugh Thomas ousted Liam Blake in the rush to secure the final position on the top ten leader board.

In the born 2009 category regular top three finisher Tom Pickavance picked up his second win of the season, pipping top girl May-Saa Smith in the final dash for the chequered flag. Cameron Hounsell led Zach Jones home for third and Matthew Hooper beat Eddie Dillon, Ethan Edge and Harry Beattie in the scrap for fifth. Abi Clayton and Henry Dormer came in separately to claim ninth and tenth, with Max Masson-Whittaker defeating Florrie Thomas in the bunch sprint for 11th.

Alec Sorby, Freddie Griffin and Deaglan Blake escaped from a leading group of seven riders to secure the top three places in the born 2008 event. Joel Long got the verdict over Charlie Williams, George Kinnish and Fearne Bregazzi in the battle for fourth, with Bob Radcliffe spearheading a second group of chasers in for eighth. Tiana Kelly and Ella Darnill completed the top ten.

Cian Howard’s final burst of speed was too good for breakaway partners Orry Lund and Rio Kelly at the end of the born 2007 class. Charlie Scarffe got the better of Jordan Carter and James Kinrade in the dart for fourth, while Florence Griffin headed Jemma Quayle and Jess Pickavance home to take the girls’ prize in seventh spot.

The up-and-coming Nicola Quaye led travelling companions Owen Collins and Ivan Sorby around for two of the three laps in the born 2006 category. On the final circuit Collins and Sorby forged ahead to gain first and second respectively with Quaye just behind in a well-deserved third place. Samuel Devereau and Sophie Smith clipped off the front of the chasing bunch to snatch fourth and fifth, leaving Rebecca Cooil to outsprint Nathan Kinrade in the fight for sixth.

In the born 2005 and earlier grouping Jonty Bregazzi went from the gun and time trialled to victory. James Devereau pipped Nathan Slack and Tyler Annis in the gallop for second, with Blae Cain the best girl in fifth place.

Notching up his second success of the night, Cian Howard emerged victorious in the nine-strong sprint that determined the outcome of the under-8 and under-10 racing bikes four lapper. The previously unbeaten Cian Jackson was second closely followed by Owen Collins, Ivan Sorby, Orry Lund, Rio Kelly, Alec Sorby, Charlie Scarffe and Freddie Griffin. Lead girl Sophie Smith beat Nicola Quaye in the tussle for tenth.

Kiera Prentice, James Devereau and Tyler Annis made an early break in the under-12 racing bikes. Nathan Slack and James Scott eventually joined them and together they stayed clear to the finish where Annis grabbed the win ahead of Devereau, Prentice, Slack and Scott. Mairi Harrison, Jack Sowerby, Callum Salisbury and Harley Howland-Smith wrapped up the result sheet.

In the under 16’s race Thomas Bostock and Adam Kelly got away from a leading group of ten riders and worked hard to build up a gap that by the finish had stretched to half a lap. Bostock outsprinted Kelly for the win with Tosh Teare the strongest in the bunch charge for third. Will Corkill was the top U/14 rider in eighth place and Amelia Sharpe the first girl in ninth position. Matthew Cooil was too quick for Corrin Leeming, Tyler Hannay and James Harrison in the second chasing group sprint for 11th.  … continued after advert
