Albert Torres of Raleigh GAC wins Shugborough Crit
After a season so far of several podium finishes, Albert Torres and Raleigh GAC finally crossed the line first to have their first individual victory in a major event in 2016
To top things off for them, they had two more riders in the top 10, Seb Mora in third place and Steven Roach in 8th.
The victory for Torres came after a race which saw no real attacks simply because Madison Genesis ground most of the 62 starters into the ground and with only 16 finishers in the front group after an hour, it was an indication of just how tough the race was.
It was the first time the crit was held at Shugborough after years in the Stafford town centre and the race was lucky with the weather as the sun came out and the rain held off until the riders had crossed the finish line.
The circuit was only 1.5km and pretty pan flat but throw in some very narrow roads, a few dead turns and cattle grids and the race turned out to be a very tough one as Madison Genesis relentlessly kept the hammer down at the front for their sprinter Felix English.
It almost worked as most teams were very depleted by the finish but with a lap to go, JLT Condor had two riders on the front, Stevie Williams followed by Ali Slater. But only a minute or so later, it was all very different as Torres and English had their own personal drag race down the finish straight with Torres getting the verdict from English with Torres’s teammate Seb Mora in third.
The only real attack was that of Jonny McEvoy’s at the start before Madison Genesis took over the control of the race.
Afterwards Torres said “I am of course very happy to win today and thank my team for a good job and over the final laps to Steve (Roach) and Mora (Seb). I am enjoying this moment and ready for tomorrow.â€
“It was a tough race today. I have spent two weeks at home in Spain where I rested a little bit because I was a little tired after the first part of the season but now I feel very good and am very motivated for the second half of the season.”
Madison Genesis and what was left of the 62 starters … not much!
Felix English (Madison Genesis) meanwhile explained “The guys in the team rode brilliantly tonight. Even though I was sat behind them all race, it was still very difficult. It was a hard course, very narrow and constantly fighting with guys from behind. Unfortunately I could not finish it off and went a bit late in the sprint.”
“I got beaten by the guy I train with in Majorca on the track and hopefully I will get the better of him next time. We lost the front with a few laps to go when the guys started fighting us for the front but I was sat fourth wheel and Alex was on the front, and I followed Sebastian (Mora) as I thought he was going for the sprint. I didn’t see Torres coming.”
“I went to go after him but hit the cattle grid and lost momentum. He had a gap and I didn’t have time to close it but I’m happy with how I am riding and the boys rode great.”
Stevie Williams leads Ali Slater with a lap to go
Seb Mora (third): It is a good result for us today. One race Albert was working for me and today I was working for him and the results are good for the morale of the team.”
Cherie Pridham (Team Owner, Raleigh GAC): “This was a long timing coming for the two Spaniards. We just had to be patient. Today, we knew Madison Genesis would do what they did as they have done that before so the plan was to stay out of trouble and that paid off for us tonight.”
“Morgan Kneisky had some bad luck though and banged his knee on the handlebars on a cattle grid and had to drop back. So Steven (Roach) was our third rider in the group that was crucial in getting the Spanish guys to the front and once they had infiltrated the Madison train it was Seba and Torres all the way.”
“We seem to do well at this race and for the last three years had podiums and a victory”.
Steven Roach “I’m really happy with my ride tonight and good it’s for the team with three in the top 10 and the win. The two dead turns on the course made it hard having to accelerate out of them and you had to be near the front because all the action was at the back with guys fighting to hold on.â€
“There was a fight to be at the back of the Madison train who had all eight up there. I did what I could to help Seb and Albert on the last lap and then they took it up.” … continued after advert
