Harry Veale riding for Cycleworks.co.uk finally found a way to win on the Owslebury circuit after several attempts. The 21 year old from Portsmouth finally found himself in a break of five riders with a couple of laps to go after being in the first break of the day and then had the legs to take the sprint.

The event was promoted by Sotonia CC on the course just to the north of Southampton and comprised of seven and half laps with its HQ in the village of Owslebury and a total distance of 60miles or 96km. Despite the overnight rain the course was dry and the morning remained that way.

The nature of this rolling course means riders with climbing legs come to the fore only to lose out on the flatter section as it rolls around the eight miles. The first to show their noses in the wind were Harry Veale, James Boyman (Farnham RC), James Peckham (Sotonia CC) and Jack Rebours (Caesarean CC Jersey) and these four built a lead of 14secs. The next lap sees a change at the front as Boyman is joined by Edward Giles (RP Vision racing) and their lead goes out to nearly a minute. In between the two leaders was Matthew Buckley (Abbots Ann Cycles) but he soon was collected by a hard charging bunch.

No sooner the race comes back together then George Fowler (NFTO Pro Racing) jumps of the front and he builds a lead to 16secs but quickly the race all comes back together again. So with just over two laps to go the definitive break goes away when Daniel Mcquillan (Tri UK) and Matthew Downie (Eden Veranda Racing) followed by Veale, Boyman and Ben Lockett (Saint Piran) at 5secs and the bunch at 50secs.

The leaders come together and start to work well quickly pulling out a lead of 1min 35secs over Austin Head (VC Revolution) and Patryk Rucki (Skinline Race Club) at 1min 55secs and the remainder of the bunch at 2mins 13secs.

As the leaders come to the line the five have become four as Matthew Downie has suffered a rear wheel puncture and he lost a minute awaiting the neutral service car to arrive. So the order at the bell was Veale, Boyman, Lockett and Mcquillan with Downie now at 1min 3secs, Head at 2mins 18secs and the depleted bunch now at 4mins 11secs.

As the riders came into view it was Veale who was the stronger rider taking the win on the line from Lockett by 1sec and Boyman by 3secs.
