Event Press Release

Jon Mould from Wales who was unstoppable in the Tour Series is looking to bounce back from a nasty injury at the Abergavenny Festival of Cycling this month and continue his sensational 2016 season.

The 25-year-old from Newport sped to a remarkable six wins out of ten races at the Tour Series of town centre circuit races in May and June.

But the fall in the last of those races left Mould shaken and needing an MRI scan to determine the seriousness of the damage. Thankfully, it was not as bad as suspected and, although he had a bulge on his shoulder it did not need surgery.

So after resting, Mould is back on his bike and will be riding the Grand Prix of Wales around Monmouthshire on Sunday July 17 to prepare for an assault on the Tour of Britain title with his JLT Condor team, who have also entered the Grand Prix, later this season.

It will, though, mean that Mould will not be able to defend his Elite Circuit Series title, secured last year with victory at the Chepstow Grand Prix. He picked up his trophy three days later when finishing in the bunch at the Welsh Open Critierium in Abergavenny.

Mould said: “I will be missing the crits and I will just be riding the Grand Prix of Wales this year so I will go flat out for that and make sure I am in the team that is selected for the Tour of Britain. Unfortunately, that takes priority over the crits.”

“I am just not trying to aggravate the injury. I have broken a bone and strained a lot of muscles as well.”

Going for the Grand Prix of Wales title will also be another chance for Mould to lay down a marker to the watching Welsh Cycling selectors for a Commonwealth Games spot on Australia’s Gold Coast in twenty months time.

The Newport man, who missed out on the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, said: “I am keen to go out to the Gold Coast.”

Mould will be alongside his JLT Condor team-mate Chris Lawless who won the Grand Prix of Wales last year and has been on good form himself in 2016 by taking a couple of Tour Series stages and also winning the opening round of the Elite Circuit Series in Otley, Yorkshire, last Wednesday.
