Feature Report: Grand Prix of Wales

A rider deserving of a race in WorldTour, Tom Stewart of Madison Genesis won again in Wales, this time in a 1-2 for this team with Erick Rowsell second and last years winner Chris Lawless third

Tom Stewart (Madison Genesis) has made it a personal summer to remember on the roads of Wales after he won the Grand Prix of Wales in Monmouthshire on Sunday.

The Yorkshire rider came home first in the Grand Prix, which was cut short due to an accident near Grosmont that held up the race for twenty minutes.

Indeed, it was a one-two for Stewart’s Madison Genesis team with team-mate Erick Rowsell in second. Last year’s Grand Prix of Wales champion Chris Lawless was third but retains the overall lead in the Grand Prix Series after an excellent year so far.

Stewart won the Velothon, which was a race out from Cardiff to the Tumble Mountain near Abergavenny and back, earlier this year and also added the Lincoln Grand Prix title to his list of successes in 2016.

Sunday’s effort saw Stewart at the sharp end of the race for much of the day. He was in the six-man break that was chasing leader Dan Patten up the main street of Grosmont when the accident happened behind him.

The race was stopped when a rider in the peloton behind the six-man break that included Stewart was hurt when a moving car in the direction of the riders got on the course  and James Lowsley-Williams, Seb Mora and Jon Mould were three of the riders to have crashed, Lowsley-Williams landing on the windscreen saying on twitter later, “Not the way I was expecting today’s race to go! But luckily Audi A3s have a forgiving windscreen ! So all good nothing broken !!” The riders involved are said to have cuts and abrasions which is something to be thankful for as it could have been a lot worse.

It meant that the intended three laps of Grosmont village was reduced to two.

First time up Grosmont, Patten led with Dexter Gardias of Pedal Heaven leading the break.

When the race was restarted, the riders roared into Abergavenny for ten laps of the town – and the race hotted up as the group of six riders was more than doubled to 14 as the two lead groups came together at the front of the race. Stewart then attacked on his own before being joined by Adria Moreno (Raleigh GAC) and Dan Fleeman (MetalTek Kuota) who had been in the original front group.

With JLT Condor at the front of the peloton in numbers, the leaders were rapidly being brought back until Matthew Holmes of Madison Genesis crossed alone to the leaders. Their lead whent back out for a while before with a lap to go, they were on the verge of bring caught.

Rowsell then attacked on the final lap, and Stewart, seeing his rivals looking ragged, countered taking Chris Lawless with him. Last years winner wasn’t so much worried about the win but the points for Tour of Britain qualification and the trio opened a good gap and held it to the end where Stewart won from Rowsell and Lawless third.

After receiving his bottle of champagne on the winner’s podium, Stewart said: “It worked out perfect in the end. It was a difficult day and the circuit was very grippy. I wasn’t too surprised on how it all panned out in the end to be honest.”

“It was difficult terrain and what I mean by that is you don’t get that much of an advantage sitting in the peloton. You are fighting with other riders all the time and looking at moves.”

“I was out in the break all day and, when I got caught by the peloton with half-a-lap to go, I looked around me and thought ‘these guys are in a right state’, people had a hard day and were not happy.”

“Erick was away on his own so I just went with Chris to catch him. Everyone had let us go.”

Stewart said it was frustrating but understandable that the race had to be stopped because of the accident. “It’s not what you want to hear and you are very worried about what has happened. We didn’t have any information but I’m glad everyone is alright.”

The race leaves Abergavenny at 11am for an eventful day in Monmouthshire

With a couple of riders out front, the bunch weren’t bothered too much in the opening miles

_0_GPWales_Report02

After the chase group with Tom Stewart (Madison Genesis), Jake Tanner, Tom Moses, Dexter Gardias  (Pedal Heaven) and Adria Moreno (Raleigh GAC) had gone through Grosmont news came through of the crash and they, and Dan Patten were stopped. What followed was a long long wait whilst the riders in the crash were attended to.

When the peloton arrived to where the leaders had been stopped, Patten and then the chasers were set off followed by the peloton

Second time up Grosmont and Stewart and Tanner, who ride the same chaingang in Yorkshire, chat with Gardias having gone when a plastic bag caught up in his rear mech.

This result in Pedal Heaven having drilled it and a split went clear led here by James Gullen.

_0_GPWales_Report12

The peloton meanwhile was splitting on the climb of Grosmont and the one on the other side of the circuit (below) which was probably worse.

The chase group and leaders then came together on the finishing circuit

_0_GPWales_Report15

Then Stewart went solo ….

_0_GPWales_Report16

And then Moreno (Raleigh GAC) and Fleeman (Metaltek Kuota) attacked what had been the lead group.

_0_GPWales_Report17

The three came together and were holding their lead well despite a strong chase from JLT.

_0_GPWales_Report19

Lampier, Dunne and Mould lead the peloton in pursuit of the leaders

_0_GPWales_Report21

JLT certainly had numbers up there as they closed in on the leaders with a lap to go

_0_GPWales_Report22

But Madison Genesis were able to take advantage and they had two riders clip off with Lawless from JLT and this was the result.
