Report: Sheffield Grand Prix

Chris Lawless sprinted to victory in the Sheffield Grand Prix, penultimate round of the Elite Circuit Series after an attacking race where at the end only 19 riders survived the hour long race around the city centre.

After Harry Tanfield (Pedal Heaven) lit it up well before the final climb, it was Chris Lawless who blasted past to win from Tanfield who had to kick again to beat Tobyn Horton (Madison Genesis).

Over 100 riders had entered this popular event that is held in high regard by spectators and riders alike and the race was on from the flag dropping. Attacks were never long in coming and some of the big names to show their face at the front were local lad Tom Stewart (Madison Genesis), Erick Rowsell (Madison Genesis), Yorkshire rider Tom Moses and others such as Alex Paton of Pedal Heaven.

But while the pace was as hot as the weather, and the crowd cheering them on around the circuit in big numbers, most of the action was at the back. Breaks would come and go but at the rear of the race, riders were constantly being popped out the back.

Race start …

Into the final quarter of the race and the final break brought back, it was time for the cat and mouse between the riders left and after the group in danger of being lapped had their sprint, won by Russell Downing by a country mile.  There was also a race within a race for the series win and in that, Harry Tanfield (Pedal Heaven) and Seb Mora (Raleigh GAC) were both looking comfortable.

Of the two, it was Tanfield who took up the running during a very physical final lap where contact between riders and bikes was not uncommon. Tanfield though, fast in his own right, had gone too early and Lawless came past him as did Horton before the Pedal Heaven rider kicked again to take second behind Lawless with Horton third. Paton (Pedal Heaven) was 4th whilst series leader Mora fifth.
