As ever, an exuberant celebration from Scotland’s Eileen Roe winning the women’s title

A 1-2-3 for JLT Condor as Chris Lawless celebrates yet another victory

After an attacking women’s race, the championship was decided in a bunch kick where with the throw of her bike, Eileen Roe edged out Alice Barnes and last years champion Nikki Juniper. The title is Roe’s second after the Scottish rider also won in 2014.

Eileen Roe: “It’s really special. It was a really difficult race to read. There were a lot of teams with numbers so I thought it would be an aggressive race. Being a single rider from a team you are outnumbered when it comes to people jumping to the front. Claire Rose seemed to sit on the front towards the end and picked the pace up so no one could jump away, so it was obvious it was coming to a bunch sprint.”

Jon Mould pours the rest of his bubbly over the head of Chris Lawless – L-R: Russell Downing, Chris Lawless and Jon Mould

In the Men’s event, it was a brutal race as one after the other, attacks went, breaks formed but the headwind on the circuit defeated them and the process started all over again as soon as the peloton got back on terms with the leaders. Like the Women’s race, and despite a nice little climb on the circuit, the race still ended up in a big bunch kick where JLT Condor used their strength in depth to set up the win for Chris Lawless and end the race witha 1-2-3! Former champion Russ Downing was second and Jon Mould third.

Lawless said of his race: “It’s a great feeling having a stripy jumper. There’s no feeling like it, pulling it on. This is only my second senior national title – the first one was in the team pursuit. This is my first individual senior national title, I’m really happy to win it. A lot of us (at JLT Condor) have free reign because every single one of the riders in our team could have won. But we did say it if was coming down to a sprint we would go for me.”
