The ninth races of this year’s NMRRL featured Groups A & C using the Serlby circuit for the penultimate time.
A breakaway of three riders established itself on the first of the six laps in the Group A race, opening up a lead of 35 seconds. The group consisted of Andy Nicholls (Langsett Cycles RT), Rob Mitchell & Dan Stephenson (both Out of the Saddle CC) and over the next two laps they steadily increased their lead to 52 seconds over the rest of the field.
With 2 laps to go, a chasing group featuring Ashley Brown (BBM), Joe Elwood (Langsett Cycles RT), Steve Ellis & Jack Stephenson (Out of the Saddle CC) had reduced the deficit to 40 seconds with the remnants of Group A a further 35 seconds behind. At the bell, the chasing group had the leading trio in their sights with the gap now a slender 15 seconds.
Soon after, Elwood attacked and was able to bridge across the gap and join the leaders and with the numerical advantage now being in favour of the leading group, they were able to stay clear to the finish where Mitchell won the sprint ahead of Elwood with Nichols & Dan Stephenson in 3rd & 4th. Jack Stephenson took 5th, 30 seconds back, ahead of Brown & Ellis and Marc Etches (Sheffrec CC) won the sprint for 8th place but over 4 minutes down on Mitchell.
Jack Stephenson maintains his lead in the Group A Overall Standings, with Mitchell’s win moving him into 2nd place, 5 points behind. After a 2 race absence, current NMRRL Champion Elwood moved back into contention a further 4 points behind in 3rd.
Group C
The Group C race was dominated by Ross Limbert (BBM Revolution) who broke away on the 2nd of the 6 laps and gradually extended his lead lap by lap.
At half distance, Mark Ellis (Mansfield Road Club) was the only rider to attempt any kind of a chase, holding an 8 second lead over the bunch at which time Limbert held a 30 second advantage further ahead.
After that, it continued to be a one man show with Limbert steadily increasing his lead until the finish where he took a thoroughly deserved win over a minute and half ahead of the bunch. Ellis won the sprint for 2nd ahead of Zach Law (Cycle Division), Mark Barnard (Out of the Saddle CC) & Edward Davies (7 Hills CC).
Barnard continues to lead the Group C Overall Standings with Limbert’s win moving him into 2nd place & Davies into 3rd.
