Steve Cummings clinched overall victory in the Tour of Britain at the end of the London Stage presented by TfL, finishing safely within the bunch to seal the Yellow Jersey presented by Eisberg, as Caleb Ewan sprinted to victory.
The Brit, who took the jersey after Stage Six in Devon, crossed the line on Regent Street St James in 17th position as the bunch fought out the victory at the end of the 16-lap circuit race. “I’m delighted. Finally I can smile and enjoy it. It’s been a tough week. It was so close that it wasn’t done until I crossed the line,” said Cummings afterwards
“I’d to thank all my team-mates for keeping me out of trouble, and the British public for supporting every day like they have. It’s been a great week. It’s a bit overwhelming, I just want to put a baseball cap on and a hood up and disappear now for a while and get back out of the way.â€
Cummings is the second British rider to win the modern incarnation of the Tour of Britain, following Sir Bradley Wiggins’ victory in 2013. Cummings also wins the Adnams Best British Rider priz. Behind Cummings there was no change on the overall classification, with BMC Racing Team’s Rohan Dennis second at 26-seconds and Team Giant Alpecin’s Tom Dumoulin third a further 12-seconds in arrears.
Rohan Dennis: “It’s been a hard race, a really hard race actually but I am pretty happy with how I have raced and the form I have shown this week. In hindsight I probably lost the race on Stage 2 but in saying that if I didn’t attack up The Struggle I wouldn’t have been as confident on the other climbs throughout the week and maybe I wouldn’t have attacked on Haytor or in Bristol. For me, you can either play the defensive game and possibly win or you can go on the offensive and risk more but if you pull it off it feels more special.”
“I still have a few more races coming up this season including the Eneco Tour and the World TTT Championships, if it goes ahead, which are both different types of races to this one but this week we have seen really aggressive and unpredictable racing so it has been a good test and I think it has shown the good form that I am in.”

Video Interview with Steve Cummings
Lotto Soudal’s Tony Gallopin took fourth with 2014 Tour of Britain winner Dylan Van Baarle in fifth. Team Sky’s Ben Swift was the other Brit in the top 10, finishing eighth. Orica BikeExchange’s 22-year-old sprinter Caleb Ewan took his first win on British roads, becoming the ninth different stage winner of the week in a highly competitive Tour of Britain. Lotto Soudal’s Jen Debusschere had taken a flyer coming through Trafalgar Square in the final kilometre and at one stage looked like holding his advantage to the line, but such was the speed of Ewan that the young Australian rocketed past, with Dylan Groenewegen also coming past for second.
Groenewegen’s runner up spot, his fourth top ten of the week, helped him into the Chain Reaction Cycles Points Jersey.
In the Yodel Sprints classification An Post Chain Reaction’s Jasper Bovenhuis took the jersey, joining the day’s breakaway once again to mop up the jersey after the first of three intermediate Yodel Sprints. Bovenhuis’ final advantage was 12-points over Andre Greipel, but the German did win the overall HIGH5 Combativity Award in a week that saw him win a stage and on several occasions light up the Tour of Britain with his attacking riding.
With no SKODA King of the Mountains points on offer in London Xandro Meurisse enjoyed a final day in the jersey, adding that classification win to his seventh place overall.
Taylor Phinney leads the move of the stage in bright sunshine
The London Stage
A fast start to the eighth and final stage in London saw four riders go clear on the first lap of sixteen and begin to develop an advantage. The quartet included Taylor Phinney (BMC). Â Thirty seconds separated the field and the leaders after four laps of racing with the pace remaining high.
Huge crowds lined the streets of central London as the Phinney group extended their advantage to one minute at the halfway point with Dimension-Data lined out at the front of the chasing peloton. With three laps remaining the lead group had been reduced to a trio with only 18seconds on the peloton and Etixx-Quickstep now on the front and leading the chase.
The catch was made with ten kilometres to go as the sprinter’s teams began to fight for position at the front of the bunch with Etixx-Quickstep and Tony Martin leading the way.Team-Sky moved up inside the final few kilometres and led the bunch into the finale with Ewan tucked into the group a few wheels back. The young Australian started his sprint early as the bunch began to split and flew up the side of the road to take a well deserved victory by more than a couple of bike lengths.
Caleb Ewan: “I am super happy,†said Ewan at the finish. “It’s great to finally get the win after coming close a couple of times earlier in the race, it all worked out perfectly today. It was a short but really fast stage that definitely suited me. The guys did a great job of keeping me in position and thankfully I was able to finish it off.â€
Another great performance from Tom Stewart of Madison Genesis getting in the break
Heanor’s James Shaw of Lotto Soudal doing his job for the team at the front of the peloton.

PREVIEW
London hosts the final stage of the Tour of Britain for the fourth successive year, with Stage Eight taking place on the same iconic circuit at the heart of the capital as the 2015 finale. Starting from Regent Street St James the route passes through the Heart of London and the Northbank, passing world-famous sights like Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall. In 2016 riders will tackle 16-laps of the London circuit for a 100-kilometre final stage.
The final stage is  as ever, a show piece for the race in the nation’s capital in front of a huge crowd and many of the city’s iconic landmarks. A sprint is expected as there was last year when Greipel won ahead of Viviani but the German was relegated to give the win to the Italian.
