Tour of Britain Chat: Graham Briggs

Last year Graham Briggs was close to a top ten place until he was delayed behind a crash and a high GC place was lost. When asked was the race a case of unfinished business for him and he replied “I’ll see how the form is this year”.

“I’ve been feeling good in the races so this has definitely been a target and over the last four weeks, worked really hard for it trying to fine tune the form”.

“Last week we did a couple of races in France and Belgium and the form is good so hopefully I can carry that on. I think I scrapped a top 15 on the summit finish so was going well last year and on the Nottingham stage, got stuck behind a crash that split the peloton on Gun Hill.”

“That was the end of GC. Then the next day, I went out and showed I was still in good form and got in the break and won the most aggressive rider and then on the last stage was top 10 again so it would be nice to carry on that on.”

“There are though some great riders here and some stiff competition to do well. You look up to these guys and see them on TV week in, week out but they are still human and it’s nice to get in the mix and see what level the British racing has brought you onto. It will be a tough week and we’re all looking forward to it.”

Asked what his formula was to keep that high GC position day after day, Graham replied “The racing seemed to suit me when they would let a break go and you were saving your pennies to the end and I got stuck into the fast finishes and it worked out. I kept doing that each day and got more and more confident. I wasn’t as fast as those guys but the top tens proved I was going good.”

“It is nice for me to come here at the end of the year and show I can do a lot more than crit racing!”
