News: Gran Fondo World RR Champs

In the early hours of Sunday 4th September the road races took place in Perth at the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. The results were dominated by the home riders with the Australians getting in the mix in most of the races.

The comments on social media on Sunday all suggested that the road races were very tough indeed and looking at the results there were a number of riders who were badly caught out including former Amateur World Champions, former Olympians and ex Professionals as well as winners of qualifying events like the Tour of Cambridgeshire.

The notable results for Team GB and those who qualified at the Tour of Cambridgeshire are:

35-39 Male
3rd Thomas Ford – the first 12 were all awarded the same time! It must have been some exercise for the Commissaires to figure out the winners.

40-44 Women
11th Jenny Gue

45-49 Women
12th Karina Bowie

50-54 Male
5th Des Woods (IRE) – 5 riders were given the same time in the race for 2nd place behind former Australian professional Tim Jamieson who attacked and stayed away in the final few km. Des had an excellent worlds with a 3rd place in the Time Trial on Thursday.

60-65 Male
11th David Deakins

70+ Male
8th Bob Barnes
12th Malcolm Golightley
14th Peter Paterson
15th Robert Roots

UCI Vice President, Tracey Gaudry, said the event was a huge success. “From the UCI’s perspective, the Gran Fondo World Series is the preeminent mass participation cycling series in the world. Over 42,000 competitors world wide raced in their own qualifying event to qualify for the Gran Fondo World Championships right here in Perth, and 1500 athletes from 39 countries came to Australia to compete.

“Perth, Western Australia staged a fantastic world championship quality event, and over 40 athletes go home brand new world champions, celebrating Perth and celebrating cycling, and the UCI could not be more delighted.”

In 2017 the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships are being held in Albi in France 24th-27th August. The UK qualifier for the top 25% of each UCI Masters age classification is the Tour of Cambridgeshire 3rd – 4th June.
