Joe, with the help of a Bioracer speedsuit, powers his way to second in the Monsal Hill Climb last Sunday

“That was hard and I felt like I’d lost it when I crossed the line” he explained after big ringing the 1 in 6 slopes on Monsal Head adding the 52×21 was hard work and he didn’t feel any tailwind!

Joe had won the year before, beating 2016 winner Adam Kenway (Metaltek Kuota) by a similar narrow margin to which he lost by last week. With some riders going to town on their bikes, cutting handlebars and taking off all but the essential bits, the bike for Joe was pretty normal he says.

“It’s a normal bike and I’ve changed nothing except the wheels which were hand built ones that are supplied to his team. I’ll probably take some stuff off it for the nationals to give me that little extra edge though, like the front mech and a chain ring off. I can definitely feel the bike is faster with the lighter wheels in it but I’m not sure I can feel it’s lighter with the some of the other bits missing”.

He went on to say “I did my first hill climb two years ago” before admitting that one of the reasons he enjoys them is the success he is having. “The climbs I prefer are the longer and steeper ones. Races over a mile or a four minute or longer effort.”

Joe’s race programme now includes a race up the Rake on Sunday in an event that has a full field including Hill Climb legend Jim Henderson, national champs favourite Dan Evans and roadman Richard Handley. 2016_ShuttVeloRapideAdvert=
