News: Drops Sign Susanna Zorzi

Team Press Release

Drops Cycling Team are delighted to announce Susanna Zorzi as our third new singing for the 2017 season. The 24-year-old is a former Under 23 European Champion and joins Anna Christian and Lizzie Holden as new Drops recruits.

The Italian has spent the last two seasons with Belgian team Lotto-Soudal where she has impressed with good performances such as 17th at Erondegemse Pijl, 13th at Boels Rental Hills Classic and 9th at Gent Wevelgem.

Team Director, Bob Varney commented: “The bond between our riders is so strong, that adding any new riders to the group obviously needed really careful consideration. It’s no secret that we are super ambitious, and want to build on our successful debut season and progress up the international ladder. The obvious answer was to add some UCI experience in the desired areas, to support and help our riders on the road.

“I’m incredibly excited that Susy is our first European signing of the off season. She joins us as Super Domestique for the Classics, with the main goal to help Alice Barnes at the Tour of Flanders next spring. In addition, Susy will be our Leader at certain other Spring Classics, bringing with her a wealth of experience dating back to when she began racing at the age of nine. A former Italian international, she is looking to force her way back into the Squadra Azzuri with a change of environment.
“The Spring Classics are where Susanna’s real love lies, but Suzy is quite capable of riding well during stage races too. She especially has history at The Women’s Tour, having finished 5th overall in 2014 and 12th overall in 2015. Our home race The Women’s Tour is obviously an important race for our team.” Team Director, Tom Varney added.

Excited at the prospect of joining the team, Susanna said: “Drops is the right team for my ambitions. I believe in this project, and I am sure that it will provide big progress for my career. “I am really glad to be part of it. My strengths are being calm and calculated during the race, but with a very high level of determination. I’m looking forward to bringing these qualities to the team.”

The transfer is subject to the regulatory process with Susanna’s contract commencing with Drops from January 1, 2017. Everyone at Drops is looking forward to welcoming Susy.
