Adam Kenway (Metaltek Kuota RT) and Lou Bates (Veloschils Interbike RT) were the big winners at the RTTC British Hill Climb Championships on Bank Road in Matlock on Sunday

After 240 riders had sprinted up the brutal climb in the Derbyshire town, on closed roads, they were crowned champions in front of a packed Imperial Hall in Matlock town centre. For Kenway of Metaltek Kuota, who said after he turned up as he had to come along anyway to pick up some other medals, it was a surprise victory after being knocked off his bike the week before. The rest from the bike post crash seemed to have done him a world of good and he smashed the course record in the process.

Behind Kenway, a pre-race favourite before his crash, there were a load of new names in the top 10 among the favourites. The championship is the first time that the riders from North, South, East and West of the country come together and so whilst the likes of Joe Clarke, Dan Evans, Matt Clinton and Richard Bussell were many people’s champions to be, others like second placed Isaac Mundy of Oxford University came north and sole their lime light on the 800 metre climb with slopes as steep as 19 per cent. Third was another rider from the South with a winning season behind him, James Lowden.

In the Women’s Championship, it was another course record for Lou Bates who has had an incredible season not just winning but setting course records along the way as she does. With her team boss Patrick Schils in attendance all the way from Essex, Bates led her team to victory as well with a time four seconds faster than the second placed rider Becky Lewis (Wrexham RC). She was a mere three tenths faster than third placed rider Joanne Clay with fourth placed rider, Joselin Lowden only a tenth of a second further back in 4th.

Riders were started one at a time at 30 second intervals and lined up side by side with wooden blocks to stop them going backwards!
