Team News: JLT Condor for 2017

Speaking to team manager John Herety today, the team for JLT Condor for 2017 is revealed with some new key signings, with one more perhaps on the cards and most of the riders from 2016 staying on after a year when the squad met their goals and more.

Number 1 on the sheet is Ed Clancy with the manager saying his Gold medal was as important to the team as any of their other achievements including the Tour Series. The multiple Olympic champion has signed again for two years after the team managed to secure his signature ahead of another team.

That alone is enough to make the manager very happy with Clancy being invaluable to the team for so many reasons. Not just his ability to win races but also his work with the younger riders in the team and also the pubic, media and sponsors.

He is, says Herety, the consummate professional and unlike this year where Rio was the big focus for the Yorkshire rider, for Clancy, racing with the men in black will be a big focus starting off in Australia on January 1.

The other big news is the key signing of a winner of two Prems in 2016, Ian Bibby. He joins the squad to not just look at fulfilling his own still to be achieved ambitions, but also strengthen the road race side of a squad which was unbeatable almost in the Tour Series. Along with Bibby, comes some big engines in the form of James Gullen and Edmund Bradbury. Both superb time trialists and able to win races in their own right as Bradbury showed in the Chorley GP, they will also bring a lot of strength to the team for the road races.

Star of the show, Ed Clancy returns with a new hunger for having some fun on the roads of Britain and beyond.

The only team rider in 2016 to win a UCI stage race for the team, Russell Downing returns going better than ever as does Graham Briggs who had that superb second place on a stage in the Tour of Britain. Another new signing is a former winner of rounds of the Tour Series, young Matt Gibson who is looking to get back to his best after suffering illness when with GB.

A rider Herety says was second on his list behind Clancy was Ali Slater, a very dependable rider who was an integral part of the team’s success in 2016. Steve Lampier will again be a man in black in 2017 as will someone he is racing with in New Zealand right now, Alex Frame from New Zealand. Former winner of the CiCLE Classic, Tom Moses continues with the team as does Ed Laverack.

The rider who had the most unbelievable run of wins in the Tour Series in 2016, Jon Mould will be mixing racing for JLT Condor and also riding for Wales on the track with an eye on the Commonwealth Games in a few years.

The final name of the known riders is Robert McCarthy who has won stages in the RAS and the Herald Sun Tour and has a very fine palmeres. The team are also talking to one more rider but at the time of writing, his signature was not yet on paper and his name will be revealed should he sign as and when it’s appropriate.
