News: Double Gold for GB in World Cup

A young Great Britain team picked up the Gold medal winning baton with two Golds in the Team Pursuit at the first round of the World Cup

With the Olympics done and dusted, it was time for the future stars of the Great Britain Cycling Team to strutt their stuff on the boards of the Glasgow velodrome and that they did with aplomb with two Gold medals in the Team Pursuit for Men and Women.

First onto the Scottish track to go for Gold was the Women’s team with an average age of 19, they showed that the cliche if you’re good enough, you’re old enough and that they were. Emily Kay (the oldest rider at 21), Emily Nelson, Ellie Dickinson (18 and rode the junior event at the Euros) and Manon Lloyd saw off the challenge of fastest qualifers Italy to step up onto the top step first.

It was the first time any the GB quartet had won a Gold medal at senior World Cup level and saw them continue the form they had shown in securing a bronze medal at the European Track Cycling Championships in Paris.

Emily Kay said afterwards “Every team works incredibly hard, but to have the crowd here every time you go down the straight, to hear them shout really gives you that extra bit of energy that you didn’t know you had and we can’t thank them enough for cheering us all the way through.” Emily Nelson added “To come away with a gold medal from a World Cup is something really special.”

Mens Team Pursuit
The second Gold came in the Men’s Team Pursuit where Andy Tennant, Kian Emadi, Mark Stewart and Ollie Wood beat European champions France. Scottish rider Mark Stewart said of the win “it was really special. It’s not often you actually get to race on home soil so to do it with your friends and family in the stands watching, it’s really nice to kind of deliver and win.”

In other events, GB’s Ryan Owens was 4th in the Men’s Sprint after having qualified second.
