Wheels: The Cero CRD38 (disc brake)

With the disc brake bike market really taking off, many of them are crying out for a wheel upgrade and Cycle Division and Cero have the answer. The Cero CRD38 Disc Carbon Clincher.

The CRD38’s are designed to fill a hole in the market and are a great looking performance carbon disc wheel that doesn’t cost the earth. At 1545g the CRD38’s are certainly light, they’re also stiff, strong and aero and combine this with the silky smooth bearings and you have a real performance wheel set.

The CRD38’s are strong enough for Cyclcross or gravel trails, light enough for sportives and hill climbs making them the perfect upgrade for any bike. If you have a disc brake bike with wheels that don’t quite cut the mustard, the CRD38’s will help you slice through it with ease!

“We wanted to make a wheel that’s aero, very light and also sturdy” says Cero’s Kieran Frend (former pro with An Post Sean Kelly). “We’re keenly aware that most disc wheels will be taken off road so the CRD38’s had to be robust enough to take a real pounding.”

“We’ve gone with a new hub on the CRD’s and while there’s a slight weight penalty, they’re extremely well sealed. A wheel like this needs to be able to withstand a mid-winter cyclocross race where they could end up jet washed multiple times. The Sapim CX-Ray spokes have again been superb so we felt there was no need to change there”.

“The carbon rims are disc specific so they’re very light. Eliminating the disc brake track allows us to really drop the weight while keeping the strength and also giving them an aero benefit. We tested our prototype CRD38’s in Taiwan in monsoon season when they were ridden in some serious bad weather on and off road. When the rain arrived, it gave us a great opportunity to test the seals and to see how they handled in the mud.”

“They handled it well and took some big hits on the trails. We also had a few dry days and we really pushed the wheels on the descents and they handled that great too.”
