News: Welsh CX Championships

The 2016 Welsh Cyclo Cross Championships head to Singleton Park, Swansea on Sunday 3 December 2016, with healthy competition for the Welsh titles.

Promoted by Gower Riders, the course in Singleton Park is an exciting and lumpy, fit for Champions. With the recent hard frosts, the course will become more challenging throughout the day as the ground thaws.

Steven Roach, Raleigh GAC, will be looking to defend his Senior Men’s title in Swansea. He will face tough competition from Jacob Phelps, Torq Performance, who has put in some strong performances in the Welsh Cyclo Cross League this season. With both League leader Matt Fratesi, Severn RC, and Steven James, Hope Factory Racing not eligible for the Welsh Championship, it opens the field up to those challenging a podium place.

In the Senior Women’s event, 2014 Champion Ffion James, Abergavenny RC, competed for Great Britain at the European Championships in October, and will be looking to add the Welsh Cyclo Cross title to her Welsh Mountain Bike Cross-country win earlier this year in Fforest Fields.

The youth categories will be hotly contested with riders from the North Wales Cyclo Cross League and Welsh Cyclo Cross League merging for the Welsh Championships. There will also be races for Under 8s and Under10s outside of the Championship event.

Competition is sure to be fierce at all levels in the Veteran Men’s races. Can Tim Davies, CC Abergavenny, regain the V40 title in his final year in the category or will Andrew Parry, Urban Cyclery retain it for a second year? And who will triumph in the long-running battle between Phil Roach, Team Jewson/MI Racing/Polypipe and Grant Johnson, Sunset Cycles, for the V50 title?

Racing will begin at 10.00am for young riders, with non-championship events for Under 8s and Under 10s, an opportunity for budding young cyclists to get their first taste of racing. Under 12s Championship will set off at 10.30am followed by Under 14s and 16s. There will be an Adult Go-Cross race at 11.50am, a fun race to get all involved in racing.

The afternoon competitions will begin with Junior Women and Men/Senior Women/Master C+ and E+ at 12.45pm. The Senior Men’s Championship will roll out at 2.00pm.

Councillor Mark Child, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Healthy City for Swansea will be crowning the 2016 Welsh Cyclo Cross Champions, showing his support for cycling in the city. The event is also supported by Totec Recruitment, HMT Hospitals and The Wave 96.4fm. There will be refreshments available and a selection of bike stalls also on site.
