Start Sheet: Shrewsbury National CX Trophy

The final round of the National Trophy will be in Shrewsbury on December 11 and it is there that the series winners will be decided including the Elite Mens. The rider leading the series, Yorben Van Tichelt is absent because of a prior contract with another event and so the rider equal on points with him, Ian Field of Hargroves Cycles Ridley, is favourite to take the series.

Field is 46 points clear of the next rider Billy Harding but just as important to Field will be the race victory especially on the course he lost his title to Liam Killeen on in January. Killeen is down to ride and whilst that doesn’t mean he’ll race, being a ‘local’ event for him and one he’s won several times, he is expected to be Field’s main opposition.

That said, Billy Harding has been at the front with Field and Van Tichelt early in the races and may well surprise as could Paul Oldham getting back to his best. In the Under 23 series, Billy Harding has a 54 point lead and is certainly the favourite for not just the Under 23 Series but also a place on the podium in the race.

In the Women’s Series, Hannah Payton has a very healthy lead of 22 points over Annie Simpson and so is favourite for the series and after her solo win Ipswich, also favourite for the win at Shrewsbury. The Women’s series however has been very close at times and on a more technical course, it may suit any number of riders including Simpson and third placed Beth Crumpton. The World Champion Evie Richards is also entered and should she ride, then the race will even more exciting with the rainbow stripes battling for the race win.

The Junior mens race at Ipswich could not have been closer with a sprint finish between Dougal Toms and Matt Ellis with Toms getting the verdict. In the series too it’s a photo finish with Toms leading Sam Moses by only three points and Ellis by eight points. There are so many riders in the mix for the series win, as well as the race, this event could be the tightest and most exciting of the day.

The Veteran Women’s race will in all probability see Isla Rowntree racing her single speed to victory and defending the 12 point lead she has in the series over Maddie Smith but there has been little between these two so it could go either way.

The Veteran Men’s categories however look to be sewn up especially in the Vet 40-49 where Series leader Nick Craig has a 44 point lead over Rob Jebb and with both of them expected to be suited to Shrewsbury, a battle between them at the front could be on the cards. In the Vet 50 Plus category, Peter Middleton has a handy lead and has never looked in danger of losing the jersey throughout the series.

The day will also see a lot of Youth riders racing with some big entries. In the Under 16 boys, Charlie Craig leads but his lead of nine points over Ipswich winner Lewis Askey (Cycle Division) is a narrow one and anything could happy there even though Charlie is favourite for the series. The race winner however could go a number of different ways!

In the Under 14 Boys, Finlay Pickering has a very healthy series lead but the category is very keenly contested with the likes of Kiely and Giddings both having won rounds as well as Pickering and so picking a winner of the race is certainly not an easy one.

In the Under 16 girls, Harriet Harnden has been head and shoulders above the rest and her 40 point series lead is proof of that and a win by her at Shrewsbury in both the race and the series is expected. The under 14s however should be closer. The series is Millie Couzens for the taking but the race victory at Shrewsbury, is another story as there is very little between the top riders.
