Results: British Cyclo-cross Championships Day 1

Day 1 of the British Cyclo-Cross Championships at Peel Park, Bradford saw race wins for:

— Harriet Harnden (U16 Girls)
— Maddie Smith (Vet Women)
— Chris Young (Vet 50 plus)
— Adam Bent (U14 Boys)
— Nick Craig (Vet 40-49)
— Ava Young (U14 Girls)
— Ben Tulett (U16 Boys)

Day 1 of the British Cyclo-Cross Championships at Peel Park saw no less than seven races held for the Youth and Veteran categories. On a damp day in Yorkshire, the course was a tad soggy which is not something the riders have seen a lot of this season but did mean it was a team effort with riders helpers in the pits kept busy.

The first race of the day saw Maddi Smith (Bolsover & District CC) defend her title and win the race ahead of Helen Pattinson (Hargroves Cycles Ridley Montezuma) and Isla Rowntree riding her single speed bike. World 50s champion Tracy Fletcher added the British title to her collection.

Men’s
After some very close racing in the category all winter, Nick Craig added yet another title to the many he’s had in cyclo-cross since a youth rider in the 80s.

It was Craig and Rob Jebb, who have both had some great battles with each other this winter, who were at the front whilst behind them, Darren Atkins and Ian Taylor were battling for the final poidum spot. As in other races this winter, Craig was able to hold off Jebb’s challenge whilst the battle for third went to Atkins after a mechanical for Taylor.

In the 50 Plus men’s race, it was the legend that is Chris Young who took a home victory ahead of season acheiver Pete Middleton. In the battle for third, Steven Davies (Hargroves Cycles Ridley Montezuma) got the better of former champion Tim Gould for third. In the over 60’s, Dave McMullen (Cotswold Veldrijden) was first across the line with 5th in the race.

Youth
Dominating the Under 16 girls as she has all winter was Harriet Harnden who won that event ahead of Eluned King and Maddie Wadsworth whilst in the Under 14’s, one of the closest categories all winter, it was Eva Young who came out on top ahead of Millie Couzens and Anna Wadsworth.

Ben Tulett prevented the Craig family adding another title to the haul over the years when he defeated Charlie Craig in a sprint finish. Lewis Askey (RST Racing Team) came back from a tough start to finish third. In the under 14s, Adam Bent timed his effort well to win that ahead Finlay Pickering (Hull Thursday RC) and early leader Joe Kiely (Welwyn Wheelers) (third).
