Day 2: British CX Championships

Day 2 saw a fifth title for Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles Ridley Montezumas)and Nikki Brammeier successfully defend her women’s title won at Shrewsbury last year. There were also titles for World U23 Women’s champion Evie Richards, European Junior champion Tom Pidcock and national U23 national trophy winner Billy Harding.

After losing his title to Liam Killeen last year, Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles Ridley Montezumas)  (above) was as hungry as ever to win it back and did so at Peel Park. Field attacked the race from lap 1, gaping last year’s champion Liam Killeen and continuing to open the gap second by second, lap by lap.

Behind Field, the battle for third was as gripping as any on the day as former champion Paul Oldham went man-o-man with Grant Ferguson. The Hope rider, who started the season with a victory in the Three Peaks, won the battle for bronze showing that his form is indeed back to its best.

Elite Women
Despite getting injured early in the season, defending women’s champion Nikki Brammeier bounced back to win another title.

Behind Brammeier, the National Trophy winner for women, Hannah Payton went home with silver whilst Estrella bikes embassador Beth Crumpton continued her chase of the two in front and finishing the race third.

The under 23 Men’s race was won by Billy Harding who has had a brilliant season, challenging the likes of Ian Field in the National trophy and in the British Championship on his home course, Harding was never challenged out front. Second was Chris Rothwell whilst third went to Frazer Clacherty.

World champion Evie Richards won her Under 23 British title with a solo effort out front ahead of Amira Mellor and Ffion James. In the Junior championship battle, Emily Wadsworth rode her Bioracer team kit to the win ahead of Sophie Thackray and Elspeth Grace (Welwyn Wheelers).

Finally, not a surprise after the way he has ridden at international level, Tom Pidcock flew into the finish superman style to win the Junior Men’s race. He was chased hard by another high acheiver on the international scene, Ben Turner and a rider who knows what it’s like to wear the stripes, Dan Tulett. Last years champion Mark Donovan was 4th.
