Q & A: Becca Carter (Team WNT)

Becca says of Team WNT that is now UCI registered, “the Team has always been awesome, but with the strengthening, both through the additional riders and gaining a UCI license, we will be getting out there, working together and bringing in some good results. The best bit about it, is the faith that WNT have had in the team. There’s been a few times that we wouldn’t have expected to go up a level but we have, and I know we’ll all give it our all.

1. What was the highlight of 2016 for you and why?
Becca: My highlight of 2016 was the end of the year, especially the Ras na m’ban – we all came together, rode a pretty perfect race but also bonded as a team. It was the first race with our new DS, Graeme Herd too, a little glimpse of what is to come (in a good way).

2. What was your favourite/most fun race of 2016
Becca: I think it’s the same as last years answer: Winchester Crit. It’s my local, it’s technical, has a few paved sections thrown in and the atmosphere is always on point! Racing in Belgium was a favourite of mine too, those races are hard but the girls all know how to handle their bikes and it never lets up. A style of racing I personally enjoy.

3. What was the toughest race of 2016 for you and why?
Becca: The Nationals. I’d wanted to go well, I couldn’t pin point why I seemed to be going backwards rather than forwards. Luckily, I’ve got an amazing group of people around me and no stone was left unturned until we worked out what was wrong but it was definitely a low in my season.

4. If there was one thing you learned most in 2016 to help you go faster/better, what was that?
Becca: Eat. Don’t be an idiot about it, it’s not worth it.

5. What is the best piece of equipment (clothing/bike/gadget) to do with racing you are proud of most?
Becca: We get team S-Works Tarmacs and my goodness still to this day I can’t fault it. I love how it handles but also how it looks. WNT have them all graphic’d up for us and you get comments wherever you are.

6. What is your warm up routine for races – rollers or turbo? Music or no music?
Becca: Rollers & Music. Normally awful cheesy music. The stuff that if anyone heard you listening to it’d be embarrassing!

7. What’s your favourite discipline on the road; road racing/crits/time trials and why!
Becca: Road Racing, I’m more of a diesel, the longer the race the better. I’d like to get into doing a few more TT’s too.

8. What comes first – long steady miles or a mix of miles and efforts for the early season training?
Becca: This years early season training for me is a bit different. I’ve been out of the UK since October, firstly exploring the North Island of New Zealand which was more about just enjoying getting some longer miles in, in nicer weather and amazing scenery. In December, I came over to Perth, Australia and the serious work started.

I’ve been getting the miles in but there has been a mix. The mix being, getting my head kicked in on group rides with a few decent riders… Quite a few of the Orica riders and U23 Aussie team live here so I’ve been hanging onto their wheels where I can. I’ll be out here until Mid-Feb so I expect the occasionally stem chewing will continue for a while.

9. Finally, what will your first race of 2017 be?
Becca: I’m going to start my season a bit early at the Women’s Santos Tour Down Under riding as a guest for Mercedes Benz Adelaide but my first focused team race will be in Spain at the beginning of March.
