Drops Cycling top team on final stage of the Women’s Tour Down Under, Grace Garner is 5th

Australia’s Amanda Spratt has been crowned the 2017 Santos Women’s Tour champion after tonight’s final stage at Victoria Park, won by Cylance rider Kirsten Wild.

The riders tackled an hour-long stage around the 1.2 kilometre Victoria Park circuit as the sun was setting on a sizzling day in Adelaide.

Spratt and her ORICA-SCOTT team mates went into the final showdown knowing what they needed to do to secure her win and they executed their plan to perfection.
“It’s a big sense of relief for me now and I am really, really happy to have won,” said Spratt. “The team were once again incredible today they had everything covered all race.

“They all said it was a harder race today than last year but I thought it was a lot easier, so it just shows how much work they did and I could just sit in and let them do everything for me again today,” said the former Australian road champion.

“It was our goal to keep this (leaders) jersey and we have done it, it really was a team effort so I am really happy we have also won the teams classification,” said Spratt. “I get to step up on the podium with the whole team and that is a really special moment for me.”

The final stage was expected to be a battle of the sprinters and that was how it ended with Wild holding off local star Annette Edmondson of Wiggle High5, and Australian Chloe Hosking (Ale Cipollini) sprinting home in third. Janneke Ensing (Ale Cipollini) finished in the bunch to hold onto her second overall, 25 seconds behind Spratt, while Wild’s result cemented her place in third, a further 15 seconds back.

“As a team we always tried to go for the stage win, with four top-five places for the team, we can be really happy with this result,” said Wild who also won Stage 2 and was second on Stage 3. Ensing was named the Subaru Queen of the Mountain champion while Hosking collected overall Sprint honours. Alexis Ryan (Canyon-SRAM) won three of the four intermediate sprints in the final stage to snatch the Best Young Rider title.
