Q & A: Thomas Umhaller (Austria)

VeloUK’s Q & A with young motivated Austrian rider Thomas Umhaller!

Thomas Umhaller is 21 years old and from Austria and in 2017, racing for the Austrian Continental Team Amplatz BMC. “The best thing about being part of that team is that I can develop further as a cyclist” says Thomas.

1. How did you get into cycle racing?
Thomas: When I was young, I go for cycling 2 or 3 times a week with my parents or my older brother. I started racing when I was just nine years old. Back then, it was a hobby but now it is my big passion.

2. What do you do in your free time?
Thomas: I spend most of my free time with my girlfriend, Anna Badegruber (UCI Team WNT). She is also more than only a girlfriend; she is also my mentor and the most important person in my life!

3. What is your favourite part of cycle racing?
Thomas: My favourite is stage-races and all hard courses in road races.

4. How was your last season?
Thomas: My last season wasn’t marked with luck because at the beginning of the year I had a knee injury and then a forced break of three months. After the break, it was really hard to get back into the race rhythm and then there was the bad crash at the ‘Berner-Rundfahrt“ (SUI, UCI 1.2)’ So I again have two weeks in my bed. At the end of the season, I was coming back to the races and was feeling strong and I was really happy to be again back on my bike.

5. What was your most favourite race 2016?
Thomas: My favourite race in 2016 was ‘Judendorf-Straßengel’ – it was the first real race when I come back from all my injuries and I have done it with an acceptable performance.

7. What is your warmup routine for races?
Thomas: My warmup program is most of the time a short but hard roller session.

8. Do you stay in Austria to prepare for the next season during the winter or get in a training-camp?
Thomas: I have been staying since Christmas in Mallorca and in February I’ll go with the team to Croatia. The rest of the winter I will stay at home in Austria.

9. When did you start training for 2017?
Thomas: I’ve started my training in November with long steady miles.

10. What are you goals for the upcoming season?
Thomas: My goal is to develop myself and to win races with the team and maybe I get the chance to win my first race.

11. What does your winter training consists?
Thomas: My winter training consist some training on the rollers but also the gym and my XC-Skies are included in my program.
