New Zealand Cycle Classic Stage 2

JLT Condor Press Release

Steve Lampier is in a podium position after two hilly days of racing at the New Zealand Cycle Classic. Lampier finished third on on the queen stage of the race, which took place overnight in the Wairarapa region of New Zealand. The high placing moved Lampier into third overall, twelve seconds adrift of the race leader, James Oram (New Zealand National Team).

The race so far

Saturday’s stage one was a lumpy wind swept affair and a decisive opening day of the five day race. Jon Mould of JLT Condor spent most of the 121km stage in a breakaway move, that would be reeled in close to the finish. In the rain soaked bunch kick for the line, Alex Frame (JLT Condor) sprinted to second.

Stage two saw plenty of aggressive riding as soon as the race left the start town of Masterton. The day would include two thousand metres of vertical climbing and a 150 kilometres to tackle. “The boys rode brilliantly today. They kept Steve out of trouble and perfectly placed and got him into the right break at the base of the final climb” – Explained John Herety.

The move of the day came on the penultimate ascent with Steve Lampier and James Oram attacking and driving the pace with Neil Van der Pleog and Sam Crome (IsoWhey Sport – Swiss Wellness) making up the group of four. The group built a 1 minute and 15 seconds advantage over the peloton going into the 7km ascent of Admirals Hill. On the steeper slopes Van der Pleog was distanced and his teammate Sam Crome attacked to take the stage win. Oram marked Lampier to ensure Oram would become the new leader of the race.

Australian Robert McCarthy (JLT Condor) remains in the green sprints jersey after two days.  Tomorrow’s stage travels south from Masterton to Martinborough over 136km. The stage will be a rest for the climbers, with a flat run to the line. Robert McCarthy will be on the look to win intermediate sprint points and increase his lead in the green jersey competition.

Racing begins at 10.00am local time (9.00pm GMT, 23rd Jan) with approximate finish time of 1.25pm (12.25am GMT, 24th Jan).
