Team Press Release

Jon Mould out witted the bunch and his breakaway companions to take the win on stage four of the New Zealand Cycle Classic. Mould becomes the first British rider to record a UCI win of 2017.
The Welshman was awarded the most aggressive rider after an incredible performance on the 142km stage in Wairarapa.

How the stage unfolded
Early crosswinds saw much of the peloton strung out for the first 30km of the day. A brief lull came when winds eased at 40km and Jon Mould saw the opportunity to attack.

The Welshman rode solo in driving rain for much of the day gaining an advantage of 50 seconds over the chasing bunch. With 50km to go he was joined by five riders who rode across to him including Australian Joe Cooper (IsoWhey – Swiss Wellness) and Mould’s teammate Robert McCarthy.

The six man group increased their lead to 1 min 30 seconds over a chasers containing the yellow jersey of James Oram. Joe Cooper became the virtual leader on the road and the the escapees kept the pace high working well together to stay away.

Into the final 5km, Cooper attacked with Jordan Kerby and Jon Mould. The trio raced to the line and Mould produced a classic fast finish, UK Tour Series fans will know all too well.
The ride handed him not only the stage win but the honour of the first British rider to claim a UCI win of 2017.

Team manager, John Herety explained that the potential poor weather meant that a tactical change rather than lining up the powerful duo of Ed Clancy and Alex Frame for a sprint finish. “Today we rode for the stage, we planned it and we weren’t looking at the general classification but Jon is now in 4th overall, two seconds away from second.”

“The stage was fairly flat, but the crosswinds drew the bunch out and we used it to our advantage. Everyone dug deep and Mouldy did a great job.”

Mould praised Joe Cooper for driving the pace of the group. “When he hit out with 5km to go me and Jordan Kerby went with him and it was pretty much just a smash-fest all the way to the line,” Mould said. “I’d gone so deep to hang onto Joe’s attack and I didn’t think I had anything left. I put it all into the sprint.”

Joe Cooper moves into the yellow jersey and the top half of the general classification is reshuffled. The race concludes tomorrow with a flat 120km stage circumnavigating the town of Masterton.
