News: Win for Dan Mclay in Challenge Mallorca

British rider Dan McLay won the final race (Trofeo Playa de Palma) in the Challenge Mallorca series and then crashed into a photographer. McLay was taken to hospital where he was treated for cuts which required stitches.

On his team’s website he said afterwards “I’m in the hospital, but I’m fine. I’m very happy to have won. The guys have done a monstrous job. I launched the sprint from a distance, but I stood my ground. As I crossed the linel, I didn’t know if I had won. I saw the photographer, I was expecting him to move but he continued to look in his camera. I couldn’t shift to the right because there were riders. I tried to bypass him and, at this time, he stood up and was hit.

“I was told by my teammates that I had won and I’ll quickly recover and return.”

Early in the race, Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde had briefly led before the peloton caught up with them and the race finished in a bunch sprint. Second was Matteo Pelluchi with Cofidis’ Nacer Bouhanni in third place.
