News: Lucy Garner’s Cycling Tips

Dreams Come True Ambassador Press Release
Professional cyclist, double Junior Road Race champion and Dreams Come True ambassador, Lucy Garner, has listed her top 10 tips for motivating yourself to jump on your bike and raise money for children’s charity Dreams Come True in 2017.

An up and coming talent, 22-year-old Lucy has competed in the Commonwealth Games and was crowned best placed British rider in the inaugural Women’s Tour of Britain where she led Team GB. She has been a part of the British Cycling Development Programme since she was 14 and started with the GB Cycling Talent team, moving onto the British Cycling Olympic Development Programme. She is now part of the academy and cycles for Wiggle High5.

If you are a cyclist looking to improve your cycling or you are participating in your first race but are struggling with training, these top tips will give you the kick start you need.

Lucy’s motivational tips:
1. Have a goal. It keeps you focused.

2. Ride with friends or a club run – this helps to know what kind of shape you are in and where you want to be.

3. Keep a check on training/PBs – it’s really good to take time to reflect on how far you have come.

4. Listen to music – sometimes I listen to music when I’m doing efforts and the lyrics help to motivate me.

5. Work with a coach – this can help you set realistic goals and means you have someone you can talk to if things aren’t going the way you thought they would.

6. Treat yourself. It doesn’t have to be every week but treating yourself to a new pair of cycling shorts or glasses can really help motivate you. Happy head, fast legs!

7. When it’s bad weather outside try not to take it as a rest day. If you have an indoor trainer than do a session on that instead. It motivates me knowing that you are one step ahead of your competitors.

8. Surround yourself with positive people.

9. Join a local club – this is a great way to improve your cycling. Training with people that are better than you will only make you stronger.

10. Try different disciplines – it’s great to mix things up a bit and try different activities. In the winter, I do a lot of mountain biking and gym work.

About Dreams Come True
Dreams Come True is a national children’s charity serving the whole of the UK. Our mission is simply to make dreams come true for children with serious and life-limiting conditions.

Over the last 25 years we have brought happiness and joy to more than five thousand children as well as their family and carers. Dreams can be as simple as a family weekend away to a specially made tricycle so they can go outside and play with their friends. Dreams have a significant impact on the whole family and allow them to create cherished memories for a lifetime and escape the hospital trips and challenges of every day life.
